Suvendu Adhikari Chosen as West Bengal Chief Minister After BJP’s Historic Electoral Victory

In a major political development that marks a decisive shift in West Bengal’s political landscape, Suvendu Adhikari was formally elected as the leader of the BJP Legislative Party on Friday and will take over as the new Chief Minister of West Bengal following the party’s emphatic victory in the recently concluded Assembly elections.

The announcement was made during the BJP legislature party meeting held in Kolkata, where senior party leaders and newly elected legislators gathered to formally elect their leader. Dilip Ghosh proposed Adhikari’s name for the top post, reflecting the strong backing he enjoys within the party’s state leadership.

The meeting was attended by Amit Shah, who was appointed as the central observer for the leadership selection process, along with Mohan Charan Majhi, who served as co-observer. Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah officially declared Suvendu Adhikari as the elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party in West Bengal.

The BJP’s victory in the Assembly elections has brought an end to the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress in the state. The result is being viewed as one of the most significant political changes in recent Bengal history, ending the long tenure of Mamata Banerjee and opening a new chapter in the state’s governance.

Speaking after the legislature party meeting, Amit Shah described the victory as a reflection of the people’s faith in the BJP’s development-oriented politics and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the people of Bengal had voted for political change and democratic empowerment after years of intense political contestation in the state.

Suvendu Adhikari’s elevation to the Chief Minister’s post marks the culmination of a remarkable political journey. Once regarded as a close associate of Mamata Banerjee within the Trinamool Congress, Adhikari joined the BJP in December 2020 in a move that significantly altered Bengal’s political dynamics. Since then, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential faces in the state.

Adhikari first drew national attention after defeating Mamata Banerjee in the high-profile Nandigram contest during the 2021 Assembly elections. More recently, he strengthened his political standing further by securing victory from the Bhabanipur constituency, traditionally considered a stronghold of Mamata Banerjee, with a margin exceeding 15,000 votes.

Political observers believe Adhikari’s rise reflects the BJP’s strategy of combining strong regional leadership with its broader national political narrative. His grassroots connect, organizational experience and understanding of Bengal’s political culture are being viewed as key factors behind the party’s breakthrough in the state.

The BJP leadership has projected the electoral victory as a mandate for governance, development and administrative change. Party leaders indicated that the new government would focus on strengthening infrastructure, improving industrial growth, expanding welfare delivery and ensuring better law and order in the state.

The political transition is also expected to have a wider impact on national politics, as West Bengal has long remained one of the most politically significant states in the country. With Suvendu Adhikari now set to assume office as Chief Minister, the BJP has achieved one of its most important electoral milestones in eastern India.
