Saptrishi Soni, Mohali, Punjab —
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has said that the rapid pace of development and welfare initiatives being undertaken by his government has left opposition parties struggling to respond, as he defended his administration’s record on governance, agriculture and public welfare.
Addressing a public gathering in Mohali, Mann said his government’s primary focus remains the welfare of ordinary citizens and the overall development of Punjab. He argued that the state’s political discourse has shifted towards addressing public concerns, strengthening infrastructure and improving essential services.
“The progress being made in Punjab is visible on the ground, and that is making some political opponents uncomfortable,” Mann said. He maintained that his government was committed to resolving people’s problems and ensuring that public resources were used for the benefit of citizens rather than political interests.
Reflecting on the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, the Chief Minister described the result as a turning point in the state’s political history. He said voters had opted for what he called a transparent and people-centric administration, rejecting established political dynasties in favour of a new governance model.
Mann also highlighted the government’s efforts in the agriculture sector, particularly in irrigation and water management. According to him, Punjab has significantly increased the utilisation of canal water for irrigation, helping reduce wastage and improving access to water for farmers across the state.
The Chief Minister said thousands of kilometres of irrigation channels and pipelines have been developed to strengthen water distribution systems. He claimed these measures had enabled a substantial volume of water to reach agricultural areas, providing relief to farmers and supporting crop production.
In addition, Mann said the government had introduced measures to improve groundwater recharge through interventions in canal and river systems. According to him, these efforts have contributed to improvements in groundwater levels in several regions of the state.
The Chief Minister also defended the government’s spending priorities, stating that taxpayer funds were being directed towards public welfare projects, including education, healthcare, road infrastructure and other development works. He further claimed that the closure of certain toll plazas had reduced travel costs and generated significant savings for commuters across Punjab.
The remarks come at a time when the ruling Aam Aadmi Party has been highlighting its governance record following its recent performance in Punjab’s municipal elections, while opposition parties continue to question the government’s claims on development and service delivery.
Punjab’s political debate is expected to increasingly focus on issues such as infrastructure, agriculture, public services and economic growth as the state moves closer to its next electoral cycle.
