Bhagwant Mann and Harpal Cheema Join AAP’s Top Political Affairs Committee

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema have been inducted into the Aam Aadmi Party’s Political Affairs Committee, giving Punjab’s leadership a more prominent role in the party’s highest-level political decision-making structure.

The development assumes significance as AAP prepares for the 2027 Punjab Assembly election and seeks to consolidate its political position beyond the state.

Mann remains the central face of the party’s Punjab government, while Cheema has emerged as one of its most prominent senior leaders. Their inclusion in the Political Affairs Committee strengthens Punjab’s representation in the party’s national-level strategic discussions.

For Mann, the move comes at an important stage of his political career. He became Chief Minister after AAP won 92 of Punjab’s 117 Assembly seats in 2022, giving the party one of the largest mandates in the state’s electoral history.

Four years later, the government is entering the most politically consequential phase of its first term.

AAP’s challenge is now to convert its 2022 mandate into a second electoral victory. The party has highlighted government employment, free electricity, education and healthcare reforms, infrastructure and its campaign against drugs as key areas of its record.

At the same time, the government faces sustained opposition criticism over drugs, law and order, public finances and governance.

Cheema’s inclusion is particularly notable because he occupies the Finance portfolio at a time when the state’s financial position remains a central political issue. The government’s ability to finance welfare commitments while maintaining fiscal stability is likely to become an important issue during the 2027 campaign.

The decision also reflects the growing importance of Punjab within AAP’s broader political strategy.

Unlike several other states where the party has struggled to establish a durable organisational base, Punjab remains AAP’s strongest state-level government. The experience of running the state is therefore important to the party’s national political narrative.

The move could also give Mann greater influence over discussions concerning AAP’s electoral strategy outside Punjab, while allowing Cheema to play a larger role in policy and political deliberations.

However, the elevation comes at a time when the Punjab government is facing fresh political pressure over the drug issue. The death of Sangrur resident Gulzar Singh after he publicly questioned Cheema about drugs has become a major opposition issue, although Cheema has denied any connection with the death and an investigation is under way.

The next few months will therefore be crucial for AAP.

The party has the advantage of incumbency and a strong organisational presence in Punjab. But the 2027 election will test whether the political credibility it built in 2022 can survive the pressures of five years in government.
