Hoshiarpur: A dispute over the noise produced by modified motorcycle exhausts turned fatal in Hoshiarpur district, with a 16-year-old boy dying after being seriously injured in a clash between groups of youths.
The incident took place in Dadian village on Wednesday night, when youths from Dadian and neighbouring Sallan village reportedly became involved in an argument over motorcycles fitted with modified silencers that allegedly produced loud, firecracker-like sounds.
According to police, the argument escalated into a physical confrontation involving several youths. The 16-year-old victim suffered a serious stab injury to his abdomen and was initially taken to Tanda Civil Hospital. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Hoshiarpur Civil Hospital, where he later died.
Police have registered a case and begun efforts to identify and arrest those allegedly involved in the clash. Officials said several youths from both sides sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Tanda police station SHO Amarjit Kaur said the exact cause of death would be established after the post-mortem examination. Police have also registered a case of causing grievous hurt under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
At the time of the initial report, police said no murder charge had been added. The investigation was continuing and officers were examining the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Police teams have reportedly been conducting raids at different locations to locate those allegedly involved in the incident.
The case has also drawn attention to a broader problem surrounding modified motorcycle exhausts and excessive noise on roads and in residential areas. What began as an argument over motorcycle noise escalated into violence, leaving a teenager dead and several others injured.
The investigation will now focus on establishing exactly how the confrontation developed, identifying the people who participated in it and determining the circumstances surrounding the fatal injury.
Police have appealed for information from residents that could help establish the sequence of events.
The incident serves as another reminder of how seemingly minor disputes between groups of young people can quickly turn violent when they escalate beyond verbal confrontation.
