Mann Claims CBI Found Nothing Illegal in Searches, Calls Action Politically Motivated

Saptrishi Soni।

Chandigarh — Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has claimed that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found no incriminating material during its recent searches at multiple locations, including the Chief Minister’s camp office in Chandigarh, and said the outcome had effectively vindicated his government.

Reacting to the CBI operation, Mann asserted that investigators did not recover anything illegal or suspicious from the premises searched by the agency. He presented the outcome as a setback to what he described as an attempt to target and discredit the Punjab government through central investigative agencies.

The CBI had carried out searches at eight locations across Punjab and Chandigarh as part of an investigation involving Mann’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Rajbir Singh Ghuman, and five other individuals. The case relates to allegations concerning corruption and alleged influence-peddling in matters such as government postings, tenders and other administrative decisions.

The agency, however, has stated that laptops, mobile phones and documents were seized during the searches and that these materials are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. The significance of the seized material, if any, will depend on the outcome of the investigation and subsequent legal proceedings.

The CBI action followed an order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court directing the central agency to investigate allegations of corruption and undue influence involving individuals allegedly connected with the functioning of the Punjab government. The allegations remain subject to investigation and have not been established as proven offences.

The Punjab government has challenged the High Court’s decision before the Supreme Court, arguing against the manner in which the probe was transferred to the CBI.

Mann has meanwhile sought to give the CBI searches a wider political context, alleging that the action is part of a politically motivated campaign against his government at a time when Punjab is moving towards another Assembly election. He has accused the BJP-led Centre of using central investigative agencies to put pressure on an elected state government.

The Chief Minister has maintained that his government has nothing to hide and that the administration will continue to focus on development and public welfare rather than be distracted by what he considers politically driven investigations.

The controversy has consequently developed into a larger political confrontation between the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab and the BJP, with the former portraying the CBI action as political pressure and the latter maintaining that investigative agencies are acting in accordance with the law and judicial directions.

For now, the CBI investigation remains underway. Whether the searches yield evidence supporting the allegations will depend on the agency’s examination of the seized material, further investigation and the findings ultimately placed before the courts.
