Chandigarh witnessed a major gangland attack on Monday evening when a key associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi was shot dead in what police believe could be a fallout of internal rivalry among friends or an ongoing turf war involving rival syndicates.
The shooting took place in the heart of the Tricity region, sending shockwaves through residents and prompting an immediate, high-level investigation. Police teams rushed to the spot, cordoned off the area, and began scanning CCTV footage to trace the attackers.
Preliminary findings suggest the victim, known to be closely linked with the Bishnoi network, may have been targeted due to disputes within the group. Officers said they are examining both possibilities—revenge by rival gangs and betrayal from within.
The incident comes at a time when the region has already been battling frequent clashes linked to organised crime. In recent years, Chandigarh and adjoining districts of Punjab and Haryana have witnessed a steady rise in gang-related activities, often involving extortion, contract killings, and turf battles.
Police sources indicated that the attack was well-planned, with the shooters escaping before patrol teams could intercept them. Forensic experts inspected the site, while investigators recorded statements from eyewitnesses and scanned mobile communication linked to the victim.
Authorities also referred to the criminal past of Parry, another figure associated with the network, whose record reportedly includes cases of murder, extortion, and illegal arms—highlighting the growing entrenchment of gangs in the region.
Senior officers of the Chandigarh Police have assured that teams are working round-the-clock to identify the shooters and unravel the motive. Additional checkpoints have been set up across the city, and coordination has intensified with Punjab and Haryana police forces.
The killing has once again brought the spotlight back on gang warfare in North India, especially the ongoing feuds involving the Lawrence Bishnoi syndicate, the Bambiha gang, and several smaller networks operating from within and outside the country.
Residents in the area expressed concern over the boldness of the attack, urging authorities to strengthen policing and curb the growing influence of gangsters who continue to operate despite many of their leaders being behind bars.
Police said further details will be shared once initial leads are verified and suspects are identified. The case is expected to see fast-tracked investigation due to its wider implications on regional law and order.
