Political Debate Over Women Welfare Scheme Intensifies

The announcement of monthly financial assistance for women has sparked intense political debate in Punjab. While the ruling Aam Aadmi Party described the scheme as a historic step toward women’s empowerment, opposition parties accused the government of delaying the implementation of its election promise.
Several opposition leaders argued that if the government was serious about supporting women, it should have provided the arrears for the past four years since coming to power. They claimed that women should have received around ₹48,000 as cumulative support if the scheme had been implemented immediately after the 2022 elections.
Political observers believe that the women’s cash assistance scheme could become one of the central issues in Punjab politics ahead of the next assembly elections. The move is widely seen as an attempt by the ruling party to consolidate its support base among women voters and economically weaker sections of society.
