Himachal Pradesh Rajya Sabha Election: Congress’s Anurag Sharma Elected Unopposed After BJP Declines to Field Candidate

In a significant political development in Himachal Pradesh, the Congress party has secured a Rajya Sabha seat after its nominee Anurag Sharma was elected unopposed following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decision not to field a candidate in the election. The announcement was formally confirmed after the final date for withdrawal of nominations passed with only one valid nomination on record. The Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Secretariat subsequently handed over the official “Certificate of Election” to Anurag Sharma, confirming his victory and entry into the Upper House of Parliament. The Rajya Sabha election process had witnessed only a single nomination submission, which was filed by Anurag Sharma, and with no rival candidate entering the race or remaining in contention by the deadline for withdrawal, the Congress leader was declared elected unopposed. Anurag Sharma will assume his role as Member of Parliament after the tenure of the outgoing Rajya Sabha MP, Indu Goswami, concludes and the formal oath-taking process is completed. Sharma currently serves as the president of the Kangra District Congress Committee and his nomination had earlier surprised several political observers because he was not widely considered a high-profile or nationally known political figure within the party structure. After being officially declared elected, Anurag Sharma expressed gratitude and humility, saying that he first bows before his revered deity Baba Bholenath and Mata Chamunda for their blessings and guidance. He also thanked senior Congress leadership including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, senior leader Rahul Gandhi, and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, whom he described as his political inspiration. Sharma further said that he was deeply grateful to every Congress worker whose support enabled an ordinary grassroots party worker to reach Parliament. He emphasized that his journey from a common party worker to a Rajya Sabha MP reflects the strength of the Congress organization in the state and promised to work sincerely to meet the expectations of the people of Himachal Pradesh. Politically, the outcome also reflects the arithmetic of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly. The state legislative assembly has a total strength of 68 members, where the Congress currently holds 40 seats, comfortably above the 31 votes required to secure victory in a Rajya Sabha election. In contrast, the BJP holds 28 seats and did not have the required numbers to ensure a win, which ultimately led the party to refrain from contesting the election. As a result, the Congress successfully ensured the unopposed election of its candidate, strengthening its parliamentary representation from the hill state and consolidating the position of the ruling party led by Chief Minister Sukhu in Himachal Pradesh politics.
