Panjab University Ensures Leadership Continuity as Vice-Chancellor Granted Extension

In a significant development concerning the leadership of Panjab University, Vice-Chancellor Prof Renu Cheema Vig has been granted a four-month extension, just a day before the completion of her tenure.

The formal notification, issued on March 27 by the Secretariat of the Vice-President of India—who serves as the Chancellor of the university—confirms that the extension will come into effect from March 29, 2026. During this period, Prof Vig will continue to serve under the same terms and conditions, as provided under Section 10 of the Panjab University Act, 1947.

The decision follows a period of uncertainty within academic and administrative circles, largely due to the absence of a Search-cum-Selection Committee until the final days of her tenure. The delay had led to widespread speculation regarding whether the university would proceed with a new appointment or extend the incumbent’s term.

With the extension now in place, the university gets temporary continuity in its leadership, even as the process for a long-term appointment is expected to be taken up in due course.
