There was supposed to be one final explanation.
In a social media post shared on July 28, Punjab-based influencer GillMohali asked followers to wait for Manjeet Kaur to recover. He said she would soon come online herself and explain what had happened to her — who was responsible, what had taken place and how she had survived the ordeal.
That live appearance never happened.
Manjeet Kaur, a 28-year-old social media influencer, died at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on August 26, nearly two months after she was allegedly abducted from Chandigarh, assaulted, taken to an area near Morinda and set on fire.
Her death has now turned a case that had remained largely out of public view into a murder investigation involving two people named by her family. It has also raised difficult questions about the response of the police during the weeks when Kaur was receiving treatment and, according to reports, had briefly regained consciousness.
A night that changed everything
According to the complaint filed by Kaur’s mother, Kanta Devi, the sequence began late on the night of July 3 or in the early hours of July 4.
Two acquaintances, identified in the complaint as Shubhi and Pinda, allegedly called Kaur to meet them near a liquor outlet in Sector 34, Chandigarh.
When she arrived, they allegedly forced her into a vehicle and drove her towards Morinda in Punjab’s Rupnagar district.
The complaint alleges that Kaur was assaulted during the journey and later taken to a forested area near Morinda. There, she was allegedly tied to a mulberry tree and set on fire.
The circumstances of the attack, including the motive and the precise sequence of events, remain under investigation.
A friend who reportedly reached the location found Kaur engulfed in flames and used a blanket to extinguish the fire. She was subsequently taken to a hospital in Morinda for emergency treatment. Because of the seriousness of her injuries, she was later shifted to Mohali and eventually referred to PGIMER in Chandigarh on July 9.
A long battle for survival
At PGIMER, Kaur remained under treatment for weeks with severe burn injuries.
For much of that period, she was reportedly unconscious. Then, on August 5, came a development that gave her family hope.
Kaur briefly regained consciousness and, according to reports, told members of her family about what had happened to her. There were also efforts to have her statement formally recorded.
This became one of the most troubling aspects of the case.
Reports indicate that the PGIMER police post informed Kharar Sadar police that Kaur was conscious and in a condition to give a statement. A communication regarding the matter was reportedly recorded in the police diary. Yet her statement was not recorded before her condition deteriorated again.
That unanswered question has now become central to the public discussion surrounding the case: why was the statement of an alleged victim of such a serious crime not recorded when she was reportedly conscious and willing to speak?
Police action intensified only after Kaur’s death.
Following a complaint from her mother, Chandigarh Police registered a case on August 27 under provisions relating to kidnapping, murder and joint criminal liability. The FIR names Shubhi and Pinda as accused. Police teams are now attempting to trace them.
The social media post that became her last message
Kaur’s online presence has added another deeply personal dimension to the case.
She had built a substantial following on social media, with around 1.46 lakh followers on Instagram and thousands more on YouTube. Her content included reels, promotional posts, lifestyle material and videos using popular Punjabi and Haryanvi music.
Her social media accounts continued to attract attention while she was in hospital.
The July 28 post shared with GillMohali was particularly significant. It suggested that Kaur was expected to recover sufficiently to speak publicly about the attack.
The message asked people not to speculate or pass judgment while her family was already under enormous emotional pressure.
It was, in effect, a promise that the woman at the centre of the mystery would eventually tell her own story.
She never got that opportunity.
Kaur died on August 26 after battling her injuries for 54 days.
A case that became more complicated after her death
The investigation has taken another serious turn following the post-mortem examination.
Police said the examination found that Kaur was approximately seven weeks pregnant when she died. The development has added another dimension to an already complex investigation and may become relevant as investigators attempt to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack and the relationship between Kaur and the people named in the case.
Police sources have also said that Kaur was divorced and had a seven-year-old son. According to investigators, she had allegedly been in a live-in relationship with one of the suspects named in the FIR.
These details, however, do not by themselves establish a motive. Investigators still have to determine why Kaur was allegedly abducted, what happened between the accused and the victim before the attack, and whether anyone else was involved.
Police now retracing the route
Investigators are examining CCTV footage from the route between Chandigarh and Morinda in an effort to reconstruct the movements of the vehicle and identify everyone involved.
The police are also questioning people who knew Kaur and the accused and are conducting searches to locate the two suspects named in the FIR.
The investigation is likely to depend heavily on digital and physical evidence because Kaur’s formal statement was never recorded before her death.
That makes CCTV footage, mobile-phone records, location data, witness accounts and forensic evidence particularly important.
Investigators must now build the sequence of events without the benefit of a detailed statement from the victim herself.
The unanswered questions
The case has left a number of questions that remain unresolved.
Why was Kaur allegedly targeted?
What was the exact relationship between her and the two people named in the FIR?
Who else, if anyone, was present when she was taken from Chandigarh?
How was the journey from Sector 34 to Morinda carried out?
Who was responsible for the attack in the forested area?
Why did the investigation not result in an FIR during the weeks when Kaur was undergoing treatment?
And most importantly, why was her statement not formally recorded when she was reportedly conscious and willing to tell investigators what had happened?
Police have said the motive has not yet been established. Until the suspects are arrested and the evidence is examined, many of the circumstances surrounding the case remain allegations rather than established facts.
A death that has become a demand for answers
Manjeet Kaur’s death is no longer only the story of a social media influencer whose life ended after a horrific attack. It has become a test of how the criminal justice system responds when a severely injured victim survives long enough to potentially identify those responsible but dies before her account can be formally recorded.
Her family is now left to seek answers without the testimony they had hoped she would provide.
For her followers, the final social media message has acquired a painful meaning. They were told to wait. They were told that Manjeet would eventually come forward and explain everything in her own words.
Instead, her death has left investigators, her family and the public trying to reconstruct those final weeks from complaints, witnesses, medical records, CCTV footage and other evidence.
The police investigation will ultimately have to establish what happened between that July night in Chandigarh and her death at PGIMER 54 days later.
Until then, the most important story is not the speculation surrounding Manjeet Kaur’s final days, but the unanswered question at the heart of the case: who abducted her, why was she attacked, and why did she never get the chance to tell the world what happened to her?
