CHANDIGARH : The Punjab government has announced an 8 per cent increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for more than eight lakh government employees and pensioners, with the enhanced rate coming into effect from September 1, 2026.
The decision was formally notified by the state government on Wednesday and comes after Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann recently held discussions with representatives of employee organisations over various service-related issues, including their demand for an increase in DA.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the government had assured employee representatives that their concerns would be considered and appropriate action would be taken. The latest notification follows through on that assurance and provides additional financial support to employees and pensioners amid continuing pressure on household expenditure and the cost of essential goods.
The enhanced DA will be applicable to eligible serving government employees from September 1, with payment to be made in accordance with the applicable government rules and provisions. Pensioners covered under the relevant provisions will also receive the benefit of the increased allowance.
The government said the decision was aimed at providing financial relief to a large section of its workforce and retired employees. DA is intended to partly offset the impact of inflation on salaries and pensions, making changes in the allowance an important issue for employees and pensioners, particularly during periods of rising living costs.
The latest announcement follows a series of discussions between the state government and employee representatives on pending demands and service-related matters. The government has maintained that continued dialogue with employee organisations is important for addressing issues affecting its workforce.
The notification is expected to bring additional financial support to more than eight lakh beneficiaries across Punjab, including serving employees and pensioners. The financial implications of the decision will be borne by the state government as per the applicable provisions.
For employees, the increase will be reflected in their salary calculations from the effective date, while pensioners will receive the corresponding benefit under the rules governing pension and dearness relief.
The decision also comes ahead of the festive season, when household expenditure generally rises, making the timing of the additional allowance significant for government employees and pensioners.
The Punjab government said it would continue to engage with employee and pensioner representatives and examine legitimate demands through the established administrative process.
With the latest notification, the government has formally converted its recent assurance to employee representatives into a policy decision, extending the revised DA to a substantial section of Punjab’s serving and retired government workforce.
