Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday conducted a detailed inspection of the ambitious India International Horticulture Market (IIHM) under development in Ganaur, Sonipat. Positioned as one of the largest horticulture trade platforms in the country, the project has been envisioned to transform Haryana into a global hub for agri-trade by providing farmers with direct access to national and international markets. During his visit, the Chief Minister personally assessed ongoing construction and convened a review meeting with senior officials from the district administration, construction agency, and market board to expedite progress and ensure that the project meets its scheduled deadlines.
Set strategically along National Highway 44, the mega horticulture market is backed by modern connectivity to major international airports, making it a key player in the future of perishable goods logistics. According to CM Saini, the market will benefit not only farmers from Haryana but also fruit, vegetable, poultry, dairy, fishery, and floriculture producers from across India by offering them access to a seamless, organized trade infrastructure at par with global standards. The government has already acquired over 544 acres of land for this project at a cost of ₹220 crore, and the total estimated outlay for the market now stands at ₹2,595 crore.
As of now, around 45 percent of the total construction work has been completed and ₹689 crore has been disbursed toward this purpose. The Chief Minister emphasized that this project holds the potential to redefine agricultural marketing in India by creating a one-stop destination for perishables with facilities that ensure storage, trade, distribution, and sustainability. Once completed, the IIHM is expected to have a covered area of 50 lakh square feet and an annual handling capacity of 20 lakh metric tonnes. Its infrastructure will include dedicated parking spaces for nearly 15,000 cars and over 3,300 trucks or trolleys. The market complex will house 17 marketing and trading sheds along with 13 additional state-of-the-art buildings equipped with modern facilities for sorting, grading, cold storage, and packaging.
During the site inspection, CM Saini instructed officials to accelerate the formation and operationalization of the market’s governing and operations committee so that farmers can begin benefiting from the facility at the earliest. He also emphasized the need to incorporate renewable energy solutions into the project. Authorities confirmed that plans are underway to install a 28 MW solar power plant during the final phase of construction. However, the Chief Minister recommended enhancing this capacity to ensure that the horticulture market becomes self-sufficient in terms of energy needs. Solar integration is expected to reduce operational costs significantly and make the facility more environment-friendly, which aligns with the government’s sustainable development goals.
In addition to energy, the Chief Minister took stock of the drinking water arrangements and gave strict directions to ensure timely initiation of the water supply infrastructure. He instructed the concerned departments to complete sewerage and drainage systems without delay and to put in place advanced wastewater treatment and recycling mechanisms to ensure sustainable water use within the market. This move aims to turn the horticulture market into a model for eco-smart infrastructure in the agri-supply chain sector.
