With Punjab’s political temperature rising ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, a fresh confrontation has erupted between the family of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira. Dr Gurpreet Kaur, Mann’s wife, has served a legal notice on Khaira, accusing him of circulating false, malicious and defamatory material about her on social media.
The notice, issued through advocate Ginnijeet Malhotra on September 3, seeks the immediate removal and permanent withdrawal of the disputed posts, videos and graphics. It also demands an unconditional written apology from Khaira, besides an apology through a video statement. The notice gives him 24 hours from its receipt to comply.
At the centre of the dispute are social media posts attributed to Khaira on platforms including X and Facebook. The notice specifically refers to a graphic carrying the Punjabi headline “BRF ਬਲਾਤਕਾਰੀ ਰੱਖਿਅਕ ਫੋਰਸ” and alleges that the Congress leader used such material to create what Dr Kaur describes as a defamatory narrative against her.
The legal notice has also raised objections to the circulation of an alleged CCTV recording from a restaurant in which Dr Kaur was shown dining. According to the notice, her image was highlighted in the footage and its circulation amounted to an invasion of her privacy and an attempt to portray her in a misleading and malicious manner.
Dr Kaur has called upon Khaira to immediately delete the material and refrain from publishing or circulating similar content in the future. The notice warns that failure to comply could lead to civil and criminal proceedings, including claims relating to alleged defamation, invasion of privacy and other offences under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
The latest confrontation assumes added political significance because it comes less than six months before Punjab’s Assembly is due to complete its current term. The Election Commission lists the tenure of the present Punjab Legislative Assembly as running until March 16, 2027.
The political backdrop is already highly charged. AAP has projected Bhagwant Mann as its chief ministerial face for the next Assembly election, with party leadership publicly asking voters to give him another term. Opposition parties, meanwhile, have intensified their attacks on the Mann government as they prepare for what is expected to be a closely contested 117-seat election.
Khaira, a prominent Congress voice in Punjab, has frequently been critical of the AAP government. His latest clash with Dr Gurpreet Kaur therefore carries significance beyond a personal legal dispute. With political parties increasingly using social media to reach voters, allegations involving political leaders and their families can quickly become part of the wider election narrative.
The controversy also comes at a time when Punjab’s political discourse is becoming increasingly personalised. Recent reporting has highlighted an escalating social-media battle involving AAP, Congress and BJP leaders, including the circulation of digitally altered and allegedly misleading material. The trend has raised concerns about the growing overlap between political criticism, personal attacks and online misinformation ahead of the 2027 polls.
For Dr Gurpreet Kaur, the legal notice represents an attempt to draw a clear line between political criticism and what she considers defamatory personal attacks. Her decision to pursue legal remedies also follows an earlier legal notice issued to retired Punjab and Haryana High Court judge Ranjit Singh over allegations concerning her. That earlier controversy had assumed a wider dimension after the National Human Rights Commission took cognisance of a complaint containing allegations against her and sought a report from the Punjab government and police.
The connection between the two controversies is politically noteworthy. Ranjit Singh is the brother-in-law of Sukhpal Singh Khaira, a relationship that was also highlighted when the earlier legal notice was issued. The latest notice against Khaira therefore brings the dispute directly into the arena of electoral politics.
For Bhagwant Mann, the timing is particularly significant. AAP is attempting to defend its record in government while positioning Mann at the centre of its 2027 campaign. The opposition, on the other hand, is seeking to make questions of governance, corruption, law and order and alleged misuse of power central to its campaign against the ruling party.
The legal notice itself does not establish that Khaira has committed defamation or any other offence. The allegations contained in it are Dr Kaur’s claims, and any criminal or civil liability would ultimately depend on the evidence and the outcome of legal proceedings.
But politically, the episode is already larger than a dispute over individual social-media posts.
As Punjab moves closer to the next Assembly election, the battle is increasingly being fought not only on public policy and governance but also on personal credibility, reputation and the political image of leaders and their families.
The confrontation between Dr Gurpreet Kaur and Sukhpal Khaira could therefore become another flashpoint in Punjab’s emerging 2027 election narrative — a contest in which every allegation, counter-allegation and social-media campaign is likely to be closely watched by voters.
