Punjab Collaborates with HPCL to Establish Compressed Biogas Project for Buddha Nullah Cleanup

In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Punjab Government has entered into a partnership with HPCL Renewable & Green Energy Limited (HPRGE), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), to set up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) project in Ludhiana. This initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to rejuvenate Buddha Nullah, a heavily polluted water body in the region.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA), Neelima, and HPRGE CEO, Mohit Dhawan, in the presence of Punjab’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy Sources, Aman Arora. The project is set to focus on the sustainable disposal and utilization of surplus cattle dung collected from the Haibowal Dairy Complex in Ludhiana.

According to Aman Arora, the CBG plant will have the capacity to process approximately 300 tons of cattle dung daily, generating around 6,400 kilograms of compressed biogas per day. The produced CBG will then be distributed through HPCL’s existing network of CNG outlets for use as vehicle fuel, promoting a cleaner and greener energy solution.

The minister further highlighted that this project is a crucial component of the Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation Project, addressing the longstanding issue of cattle dung being discharged into Buddha Nullah through the sewerage system. By repurposing organic waste into renewable energy, the initiative aims to significantly reduce pollution in the area.

Principal Secretary for New and Renewable Energy Sources, Ajoy Kumar Sinha, revealed that the project is valued at over ₹35 crore and will be implemented under the State Non-Conventional & Renewable Energy (NRSE) Policy, 2012. The plant will be developed on a Build, Own, and Operate (BOO) basis, ensuring efficient management and operation by the stakeholders. He also assured the HPRGE representatives that the government will provide all necessary support, including regulatory approvals, to facilitate the smooth execution of the project.

The event also witnessed the presence of Director PEDA, MP Singh, along with other senior officials from the department, marking a collaborative effort towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for Punjab.
