A pair of late-night explosions near high-security installations in Punjab has raised fresh concerns over safety in sensitive zones, even as authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported. The incidents, occurring within a span of a few hours in Jalandhar and Amritsar, have prompted a coordinated investigation involving state and central agencies.
The first explosion was reported at approximately 8:15 pm outside the Border Security Force headquarters in Jalandhar. According to preliminary accounts, a scooter parked near the main gate suddenly caught fire and exploded, causing a loud blast that alarmed residents and security personnel. Visuals circulating locally show flames engulfing the vehicle, with the impact strong enough to create panic in the surrounding area. Police and BSF units quickly secured the location, while forensic teams began collecting evidence to determine whether the blast was accidental or deliberate.
Roughly two and a half hours later, a second explosion occurred near the Khasa cantonment area in Amritsar, close to the international border. The blast took place near the outer boundary of a military installation, prompting an immediate response from local police and army officials stationed in the cantonment.
Speaking on the incident, Aditya S. Warrier said that police received information about a loud explosion at around 10:50 pm and rushed to the scene along with senior army personnel. A Bomb Disposal Squad was deployed to inspect the site, while the Forensic Science Laboratory team collected samples for further examination. Authorities are now working to determine the exact cause and nature of the explosion.
Initial findings suggest that the Amritsar blast may have been of low intensity. Investigators are exploring the possibility that an explosive object was thrown toward the perimeter wall by unidentified individuals. Minor structural damage has been reported, but no injuries have been confirmed.
The proximity of both incidents to key security establishments has intensified concern, particularly in a border state like Punjab, where security agencies remain alert to cross-border threats and illegal activities. Officials are examining whether the two explosions are linked or if they occurred independently. Central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency, are also monitoring the situation.
The developments have triggered strong political reactions. Bikram Singh Majithia criticised the state government, alleging a decline in law and order and pointing to previous incidents involving attacks on security infrastructure and organised crime. He called for immediate intervention by the central leadership to strengthen security in the state.
Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party also expressed concern, describing the incidents as a warning sign of weakening public safety. They urged a transparent investigation and accountability, especially given the sensitive locations involved.
Meanwhile, representatives of the Indian National Congress emphasised the need for preventive action, stating that repeated security incidents could undermine public confidence if not addressed decisively.
The explosions come shortly after a recent blast attempt on a railway track in Patiala district, which had already heightened alert levels among security agencies. Investigators are now assessing whether there is any connection between these incidents, although no group has claimed responsibility so far.
Punjab Police officials have stated that all angles are being examined and that conclusions will be drawn only after forensic analysis is complete. Senior officers continue to supervise the investigation, with surveillance footage and technical data being closely reviewed to identify those responsible.
While the absence of casualties has provided some relief, the incidents underscore ongoing challenges in safeguarding sensitive installations. As the investigation progresses, attention will remain focused on identifying any larger network behind the explosions and strengthening security measures to prevent similar occurrences.
