A Sikh man and his son were shot and killed in a brazen, daytime shooting in Edmonton, Canada.
The victims have been identified as Harpreet Singh Uppal, 41, and his 11-year-old son. Uppal was a well-known figure in the city’s Sikh community and was described by police as a “higher-level figure” in the organized crime scene.
The shooting occurred outside a gas station on Thursday afternoon. Police say that Uppal and his son were in a car with another child when they were approached by a gunman who opened fire. Uppal and his son were killed, while the other child was not injured.
Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide and are urging anyone with information to come forward. They say that the shooting is a “sick and twisted” escalation of gang violence in the city.
This is the latest in a string of violent incidents in Edmonton. In recent months, there have been several shootings and stabbings, as well as an increase in gang activity. Police are concerned about the level of violence in the city and are working to address the issue.
In a statement, Edmonton Mayor Amarjeet Sohi expressed his condolences to the Uppal family and called for an end to gun violence in the city.
“This is a senseless tragedy that has taken the lives of two innocent people,” Sohi said. “I am heartbroken for the Uppal family and for our entire community. We must work together to end gun violence in our city.”
The Sikh community in Edmonton is also reeling from the shooting. Uppal was a well-respected member of the community and his death is a major loss.
“We are devastated by this senseless tragedy,” said Gurpreet Singh, president of the Sikh Society of Edmonton. “Harpreet was a kind and generous man who was always willing to help others. He was a pillar of our community and will be deeply missed.”
The shooting has also raised concerns about the safety of children in Edmonton. Uppal’s son was just 11 years old when he was killed.
“No child should have to live in fear of being shot,” said Sohi. “We need to make our city safe for everyone, including our children.“
