AAP Faces Tough Competition as Congress Aims to Regain Ground in Delhi Elections

As the Delhi Assembly elections draw near, the political landscape is heating up, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bracing for a challenging contest. Recent analyses suggest that Congress could play a pivotal role in these elections, potentially disrupting AAP’s chances of securing a third consecutive term. With Congress aiming to increase its vote share, even by a few percentage points, the situation could significantly benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is keen to reclaim power after nearly three decades in opposition.
AAP leaders are acutely aware of the precarious position they find themselves in. Historically, their significant victories in 2015 and 2020—where they won 67 and 62 seats respectively—were largely attributed to high voter turnout and support for their welfare schemes. However, internal party sources indicate that this election could be one of their toughest yet. AAP’s ideal scenario would be to secure over 60 seats, but they may settle for a win with around 50 seats to retain some semblance of stability.
The party is particularly concerned about Congress’s resurgence, which could siphon off crucial votes and inadvertently bolster the BJP’s position. In previous elections, the margins of victory were often slim, indicating that even minor shifts in voter sentiment could have substantial impacts on the final results. For instance, during the Municipal Corporation elections, AAP’s vote share dropped from 54% to 26%, while Congress’s share rose from 10% to 21%, demonstrating their potential to regain influence.
Key Constituencies Under Scrutiny
AAP is closely monitoring about ten constituencies where they expect fierce competition from Congress candidates. Notable contests include:
Okhla: Ariba Khan, daughter of former Congress MLA Asif Ahmed Khan, is challenging AAP’s Amanatullah Khan.
Chandni Chowk: Mudhit Agarwal, son of senior Congress leader JP Aggarwal, is up against AAP’s Punardeep Singh Sahni.
Badli: The contest pits Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav against AAP’s Ajay Yadav.
These races are critical as they could determine the overall dynamics of the election.
The BJP is not sitting idle; it has ramped up its campaign efforts with high-profile leaders like Prime Minister Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath actively participating in rallies. Their strategy includes capitalizing on any discontent towards AAP while attempting to sway undecided voters. The BJP’s historical absence from power in Delhi adds urgency to their campaign as they seek to capitalize on any slip by AAP or resurgence by Congress.
As the February 5 election date approaches, all eyes will be on how voter dynamics shift in response to these developments. With opinion polls showing varying predictions—some favoring AAP while others hint at potential gains for BJP and Congress—the outcome remains uncertain. The interplay between these three parties will be crucial in shaping not just the future of Delhi but also the broader political narrative in India.
