Art Beyond Bars”: Model Jail Inmates Showcase Creativity in Exhibition at Government Museum & Art Gallery, Chandigarh

The Department of Prison & Correctional Administration has orchestrated a remarkable event that exemplifies the transformative power of art within the confines of the justice system. An exhibition featuring an array of paintings, sculptures, and other art forms crafted by the inmates of Model Jail, Chandigarh, has been inaugurated at the Government Museum & Art Gallery in Sector-10 C, Chandigarh. The exhibition, which is scheduled from August 25, 2023, to September 8, 2023, between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, is poised to captivate visitors with the exceptional talent and creativity of incarcerated individuals.

The Chief Guest for the inauguration was Sh. Dharampal, IAS, Adviser to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh, who officially opened the event. Joining him were Sh. Raj Kumar Singh, Inspector General of Prisons, UT, Chandigarh, Dr. Palika Arora, Addl. IG Prisons, UT Chandigarh, and other jail officers. The event serves as a testament to the potential of art as a means of personal growth, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.

The artistic creations on display are nothing short of exceptional. Canvas paintings, intricately crafted waste paper sculptures, uniquely designed waste wood lampshades, and beautifully painted planters stand as a testament to the artistic prowess of the inmates.
