The ongoing Lok Sabha elections in India have taken a dramatic turn with the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21. Kejriwal is currently lodged in the Tihar jail under judicial custody, accused of money laundering related to the Delhi government’s now-scrapped excise policy.

Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, has lashed out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for arresting her husband, saying that the people are smart and will respond to this move through their votes. She made these comments at Ahmedabad airport before heading to election rallies for AAP candidates in Gujarat’s Bharuch and Bhavnagar Lok Sabha constituencies.

The BJP’s move to arrest Kejriwal has been seen as an attempt to silence him and prevent him from campaigning for the elections. However, Sunita Kejriwal believes that this will only backfire and energize the AAP’s supporters. She told media persons at the airport, “They have put Arvind Kejriwal forcefully behind bars during elections so that his voice doesn’t reach the people. But the people are very smart and they will respond with their votes.”

AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sandeep Pathak, who accompanied Sunita Kejriwal on the election tour, also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his remarks that he won’t allow reservation to Muslims in the name of religion. Pathak questioned Modi’s motives, saying, “I would like to ask the prime minister why he remembers all these things before the elections. Why don’t you ask for votes on the strength of your work? I think the prime minister is the biggest friend of Pakistan”. The arrest of Kejriwal has sparked a heated debate in the political arena, with many seeing it as a move to discredit the AAP and its leader. However, Sunita Kejriwal’s comments suggest that the party is confident that the people will respond positively to this move and vote for them in large numbers.
