In a significant boost for the Opposition, the Congress-led INDIA group won 10 assembly seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured two seats in the Assembly by-polls held across seven states on July 10, according to the Election Commission’s website on Saturday. Additionally, an independent candidate, Shankar Singh, won the Rupauli seat in Bihar by a margin of 8,200 votes. In Himachal Pradesh, Ashish Sharma of the BJP won the Hamirpur assembly bypoll, defeating Congress candidate Pushpender Verma by 1,571 votes. BJP’s victory in Hamirpur was contrasted by Congress wins in Dehra and Nalagarh, with CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife, Kamlesh Thakur, winning the Dehra seat by nearly 9,400 votes. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party celebrated as Mohinder Bhagat retained the Jalandhar West seat, defeating BJP’s Sheetal Angural by a margin of 37,325 votes. This victory increased AAP’s strength to 91 MLAs in the 117-member Punjab assembly. In Madhya Pradesh’s Amarwara constituency, BJP’s Kamslesh Pratap Shah retained his seat, defeating Congress’s Dheeran Shah Invati by 3,207 votes. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) swept the West Bengal by-polls, winning all four contested constituencies. TMC’s Krishna Kalyani won Raiganj by 50,077 votes, Mukut Nami Adhikari secured Ranaghat Dakshin by 74,485 votes, and Madhuparna Thakur triumphed in Bagda with a 74,251-vote margin. In Tamil Nadu, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), an INDIA bloc partner, won the Vikravandi seat by over 67,000 votes. Uttarakhand saw Congress retaining the Badrinath seat with Lakhpat Singh Butola defeating BJP’s Rajendra Singh Bhandari by 5,224 votes, and narrowly winning the Manglaur seat by 422 votes. In Bihar’s Rupauli, Independent candidate Shankar Singh defeated JD(U) candidate Kaladhar Prasad Mandal, underscoring the diverse political shifts across the regions. These results highlight the strengthening position of the Opposition’s INDIA group, marking crucial victories in the states while also demonstrating BJP’s persistent strongholds, indicating a dynamically evolving political landscape ahead of future elections.
