Chandigarh Drug Control Officer and Aide Arrested for Demanding Bribe from Chemist

Chandigarh, September 29, 2023: The Chandigarh Vigilance Bureau has arrested Drug Control Officer Sunil Chaudhary and his aide Ashok Narula for demanding a bribe of Rs 80,000 from a chemist.

The complainant, who runs an orthopaedic surgical shop in Dhanas, Chandigarh, alleged that Chaudhary and Narula visited his shop about a month ago and checked for shortcomings. Chaudhary threatened to seal the shop if the minor deficiencies were not fixed immediately.

Narula then offered to get the complainant’s file approved in exchange for Rs 1 lakh and assured that his shop will not be sealed. The complainant initially refused, but Narula later brought down the demand to Rs 80,000 and asked him to visit his office in Sector 20 with the money.

The complainant could not arrange the money and went to meet Chaudhary at GMSH Sector 16, Chandigarh, where Narula was also present. He requested Chaudhary to reduce the bribe amount, but Chaudhary refused.

The complainant then approached the Vigilance Bureau, Chandigarh, and a trap was laid. Narula was arrested red-handed while accepting a bribe amount of Rs 25,000. He was produced before the Hon’ble court and obtained three days police remand.

Chaudhary is absconding and the Vigilance Bureau is searching for him. Further investigation of the case is underway.
