Chandigarh-Manali NH Reopens After Eight-Hour Blockage, Authorities Urge Caution Amid Monsoon Warnings
The Chandigarh-Manali National Highway (NH-3), a critical route connecting key regions in Himachal Pradesh, was temporarily closed for over eight hours due to two major disruptions, causing significant inconvenience to travelers. The highway, which frequently witnesses traffic disruptions due to landslides and other monsoon-related incidents, was blocked in two different locations, leading to a considerable delay in restoring normal traffic flow.
The first incident occurred near Khotinala between Pandoh and Aut, where a large trailer carrying heavy machinery lost control and overturned on the highway. The overturned vehicle completely obstructed the road, making it impossible for any traffic to pass. Although local authorities and emergency response teams, including personnel from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), were quick to respond, the enormity of the trailer made it challenging to clear the debris promptly.
Despite efforts to clear the road, only light vehicles were allowed to pass through the narrow spaces late at night. However, large vehicles, including commercial transporters, were forced to wait until the early morning when heavier machinery arrived to move the trailer aside. This allowed the highway to be reopened for one-way traffic after nearly 13 hours of closure, offering a partial but much-needed relief to stranded commuters.
Mandi’s Additional Superintendent of Police, Sagar Chander, confirmed that the highway was reopened for traffic after the debris was cleared. The temporary closure, although inconvenient, was managed effectively by diverting light vehicles to alternative routes between Mandi and Kullu. This quick redirection of traffic helped mitigate some of the disruptions caused by the blockage, ensuring that commuters faced minimal delays despite the adverse conditions.
Officials praised the quick response of the highway authority, which worked tirelessly throughout the night to restore normalcy on the NH-3. Their efforts ensured that the road was cleared as swiftly as possible, minimizing the impact on both local commuters and commercial transporters who rely heavily on this crucial route.
As the monsoon season continues to bring heavy rains to the region, local authorities have issued warnings about the possibility of more landslides and adverse weather conditions. The ongoing monsoon has already triggered several such incidents in the past, leading to periodic closures of the highway.
Travelers are advised to exercise extreme caution while driving on the Chandigarh-Manali NH and to stay updated on the latest road conditions through official channels. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and to be prepared for potential delays due to the unpredictable nature of the monsoon.
While the highway has been partially restored, the incident highlights the vulnerability of the Chandigarh-Manali NH during the monsoon season. With the possibility of more landslides looming, it is crucial for both authorities and travelers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure safety on the roads.
