Chandigarh Residents Get Double Good News: Road Access and Flyover Construction Approved

Chandigarh, India – Residents of Chandigarh have received double good news that will address their long-standing concerns. On May 1st, the road outside the Punjab Chief Minister’s residence was opened to the public, and the Punjab and Haryana High Court gave the green light for the construction of a flyover from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur, aimed at easing traffic congestion.

Road Access Granted

The road outside the Chief Minister’s residence had been closed to the public for several years due to security reasons. However, following High Court orders, the road has been reopened, allowing residents to utilize this important route.

Flyover Construction Approved

The construction of a flyover from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur had been on hold for five years due to a High Court order in 2019 in response to a petition filed by an NGO raising concerns about the cutting down of trees for the project. However, on Tuesday, the court lifted the stay, recognizing the flyover as a crucial need for the city and acknowledging that further delays in development projects would not be in the public interest.

Addressing Traffic Woes

The Chandigarh administration had finalized plans for the flyover to address the increasing traffic congestion between Zirakpur and Chandigarh. However, the Run Club, an organization, had filed a petition in the High Court objecting to the felling of trees for the project, leading to the initial stay order. The petitioners had argued that the flyover was not mentioned in the city’s master plan, and its construction would alter the city’s landscape.

Moving Forward

The High Court’s decision to approve the flyover construction marks a significant step towards alleviating traffic congestion in the area. While concerns about environmental impact remain, the administration has assured that appropriate measures will be taken to minimize any adverse effects. The flyover is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters and contribute to smoother traffic flow in the region.
