Chandigarh Tri-City Takes a Giant Leap Towards Modern Mass Transit with MRT Network Approval
Chandigarh, India – December 18, 2023: In a major leap forward for urban mobility in the Chandigarh Tri-City area, the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) took key decisions during its second meeting, paving the way for a comprehensive Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network.

- Depot Entry: 2.50 Km
MRT Expansion Confirmed:
- UMTA approved the revised network length of 91 Km, marking a significant expansion from the earlier 79.5 Km plan.
Depot Locations Under Scrutiny:
- Recognizing the importance of depot placement, the meeting established a subcommittee to assess the feasibility of proposed locations in each state.
Elevated or Underground? Both Options on the Table:
- In a critical decision, UMTA directed RITES to submit proposals for both elevated and underground corridors to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), along with a comprehensive analysis of their respective advantages, disadvantages, and financial implications.
