Chandigarh Tri-City Takes a Giant Leap Towards Modern Mass Transit with MRT Network Approval

Chandigarh, India – December 18, 2023: In a major leap forward for urban mobility in the Chandigarh Tri-City area, the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMTA) took key decisions during its second meeting, paving the way for a comprehensive Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network.

Green Light for Area-Based Mobility Plans:

  • The meeting saw the pivotal approval of Area-Based Comprehensive Mobility Plans (AAR) prepared by RITES, a crucial step towards realizing the MRT vision.

MRT Network Takes Shape:

  • RITES’ Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) proposed a phased MRT network spanning approximately 154.5 Km. Phase I, with an approved length of 79.5 Km, received the go-ahead during the inaugural meeting.

Phase I Alignment Unveiled:

  • Addressing the critical issue of route options, RITES proposed a revised Phase I alignment stretching 91 Km. This approved alignment encompasses:
    • Corridor 1: Sultanpur, New Chandigarh to Sector 28, Panchkula (34 Km)
    • Corridor 2: Sukhna Lake to ISBT Zirakpur via ISBT Mohali & Chandigarh Airport (41.20 Km)
    • Corridor 3: Grain Market Chowk (Sector 39) to Transport Light Chowk (Sector 26) (13.30 Km)
    • Depot Entry: 2.50 Km

MRT Expansion Confirmed:

  • UMTA approved the revised network length of 91 Km, marking a significant expansion from the earlier 79.5 Km plan.

Depot Locations Under Scrutiny:

  • Recognizing the importance of depot placement, the meeting established a subcommittee to assess the feasibility of proposed locations in each state.

Elevated or Underground? Both Options on the Table:

  • In a critical decision, UMTA directed RITES to submit proposals for both elevated and underground corridors to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), along with a comprehensive analysis of their respective advantages, disadvantages, and financial implications.

Transformative Vision Takes Flight:

These vital decisions by UMTA mark a major milestone in the development of the Chandigarh Tri-City’s MRT network. With a clear roadmap for Phase I and comprehensive planning for Phase II, the project promises to revolutionize urban mobility in the region, promoting sustainability, reducing congestion, and enhancing quality of life for residents.
