Chandigarh’s Nivedita Trust Promotes Millets in Restaurants
Chandigarh’s Nivedita Trust, a non-profit organization, is working to promote millets in restaurants as part of its Aahar Kranti (AK) campaign. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the health and environmental benefits of millets, and to encourage people to consume more of these nutritious grains.
On October 6, 2023, the Trust held an interactive session at Government College of Commerce and Business Administration (GCCBA) to discuss the importance of millets. The keynote speaker, Pradeep Joshi, Akhil Bharatiya Sah Sampark Parmukh, spoke about the nutritional value of millets and their role in sustainable agriculture.
Nivedita Trust has also appointed Guneet Swani, a renowned city-based social entrepreneur, as its Brand Ambassador for the AK campaign. Swani is working to get more restaurants in Chandigarh to offer millet-based dishes on their menus.
At the GCCBA event, over 15 restaurant owners pledged to promote at least one millet dish. Some of the well-known restaurants participating in the initiative include Olive Café & Bar, Back to Source, JC’s, Scola, Cottage, Virgin Courtyard, Kakuna, House of Lords at The Altius Boutique Hotel, Tahiti, Wild Thyme, So Delhi, AU Four, Qizo, Organic Fresco, Nabobs, Hedgehog Café, and Wildwood.
Nivedita Trust is working to make Chandigarh the first “health smart city” in India. The Trust believes that by promoting millet consumption, it can help people to lead healthier lives and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Millets are a group of nutrient-rich grains that are drought-tolerant and can be grown on marginal lands. They are a good source of protein, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Millets are also gluten-free, making them a good option for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance.
The promotion of millets is also good for the environment. Millets require less water and fertilizer than other crops, and they can help to improve soil health.
Nivedita Trust’s work to promote millets in Chandigarh is an important step towards a healthier and more sustainable future for the city.
