Chidambaram Defends Congress Manifesto and Accuses BJP of Unlevel Playing Field
In a recent statement, P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, defended the Congress manifesto amidst BJP attacks, particularly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chidambaram attributed the BJP’s criticism to the traction the Congress manifesto was gaining across the country, with people discussing it even in remote villages of Tamil Nadu. He dismissed the BJP’s charge that the Congress manifesto was an attempt to appease one particular community, stating that the party aimed to bring justice to every section of society, including Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and the poor, irrespective of their religion.
Chidambaram also criticized the BJP for its perceived authoritarianism, accusing the party of undermining federalism and the Constitutional declaration that India is a Union of States. He emphasized the importance of pluralism and diversity in India, contrasting it with the BJP’s alleged majoritarianism and authoritarianism.
Furthermore, Chidambaram highlighted the uneven playing field in the ongoing elections due to the BJP’s economic might. He pointed out that the BJP had collected Rs 8,500 crore through electoral bonds, while the Congress’s funds were frozen in bank accounts, making it difficult for the party to operate. Despite these challenges, Chidambaram expressed confidence that the Congress would do well, as people would support the party.
In response to the BJP’s claim that it would win more than 400 seats this time, Chidambaram dismissed the notion, stating that the BJP would lose all 25 seats it was contesting in Tamil Nadu and all 20 seats in Kerala.
