In a pivotal meeting held yesterday to assess the ongoing rehabilitation and restoration endeavors in Rohru, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu demonstrated strong leadership by issuing directives to create a comprehensive strategy for the reopening of all roads within the Rohru assembly segment by August 15, 2023. During the session, Chief Minister Sukhu meticulously reviewed reports detailing the damages incurred by various departments including Public Works, Jal Shakti, Electricity, Horticulture, Agriculture, and private properties.

With an urgency to fast-track road restoration within the Rohru assembly constituency, the Chief Minister promptly allocated a significant sum of one crore rupees to the Public Works Department. Recognizing the critical importance of main and connecting roads, especially those linking villages, he further sanctioned an additional 1.20 crore rupees to facilitate the repair of damaged roads across development blocks in Rohru, Chauhara, Jubbal, and Kotkhai.

Acknowledging the necessity for seamless transportation of apple produce to markets, Chief Minister Sukhu urged officers to work around the clock to aid farmers and horticulturalists in their transportation efforts. Stressing on the creation of temporary roads where necessary, he set an ambitious deadline for the full functionality of all link roads by August 15, demanding a comprehensive progress report from the Public Works Department and the Deputy Commissioner.

Amid the substantial property losses caused by unprecedented rainfall, resulting in flash floods and landslides with a cumulative damage exceeding 8,000 crore rupees, Chief Minister Sukhu reassured the affected regions that financial constraints would not impede the restoration of normalcy.

Elaborating on the losses sustained, he revealed an estimated loss of around 340 crore rupees within the Rohru assembly constituency due to heavy rains. The Public Works Department reported losses of 155 crore rupees, the Revenue Department 84 crore rupees, the Jal Shakti Department 69 crore rupees, the Horticulture Department 23 crore rupees, in addition to approximately nine crore rupees across other departments.

Highlighting the extent of the calamity’s impact, the meeting disclosed that 34 houses were completely destroyed and 819 houses suffered partial damage within the Rohru assembly constituency. Moreover, the disaster led to the destruction of 137 cow shelters and around 21,000 apple plants. Offering relief measures, a sum of 1.09 crore rupees has been allocated to assist 120 households grappling with complete or partial damage.

In the wake of this monumental challenge, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s firm and proactive approach instills hope and confidence as the state rallies together to overcome adversity and restore the region’s vitality.
