Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu Joins BJP: A Blow to Congress in Punjab

In a significant political move, Ravneet Singh Bittu, a Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, dealt a major blow to the Congress party today by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bittu, who hails from a prominent political lineage as the grandson of former Chief Minister Beant Singh, has been a key leader of the Punjab Congress, representing Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms. However, his decision to switch allegiance to the BJP marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Punjab.

Vinod Tawde, a prominent BJP leader, welcomed Bittu into the party fold, offering him primary membership. Bittu’s political career has been marked by significant electoral victories, particularly in the 2019 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections, where he secured decisive wins in the Ludhiana constituency. Prior to that, he entered the Lok Sabha by winning from Anandpur Sahib constituency during the 2009 general elections.

In March 2021, Ravneet Singh Bittu was appointed as the interim leader of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha for a brief period, filling in for Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who was preoccupied with the 2021 West Bengal election campaign. Vinod Tawde seized this opportunity to highlight Bittu’s political lineage, emphasizing his familial ties to Beant Singh.

This move comes at a crucial juncture for both the Congress and the BJP in Punjab, with assembly elections looming on the horizon. Bittu’s defection is likely to have significant repercussions for the Congress party in the state, potentially weakening its stronghold in key constituencies. On the other hand, his entry into the BJP fold strengthens the party’s position in Punjab, bolstering its electoral prospects.

With Bittu’s switch to the BJP, the political dynamics in Punjab are set to undergo a significant transformation, with both parties gearing up for a fiercely contested electoral battle. As the state braces itself for the upcoming polls, Bittu’s move underscores the fluidity of political allegiances and the evolving landscape of Indian politics.
