Former Bureaucrats Sukhbir Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar Appointed as Election Commissioners by PM Modi-led Panel
Former bureaucrats Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Gyanesh Kumar have been appointed as the new election commissioners following a panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, announced committee member and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Thursday.
Chowdhury revealed that out of the six names considered by the panel for the selection of the two Election Commissioners, Sandhu and Kumar emerged as the final choices, garnering majority support from the high-powered panel. However, he raised concerns over the absence of the Chief Justice of India in the selection process and the lack of clarity regarding the shortlisting of candidates from over 200 applicants, overseen by the Law Minister-led search committee.
The six shortlisted candidates included Utpal Kumar Singh, Pradeep Kumar Tripathi, Gyanesh Kumar, Indevar Pandey, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, and Sudhir Kumar Gangadhar Rahate, all of whom are former bureaucrats. Chowdhury confirmed that Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu were finalized for the appointment as Election Commissioners.
Notably, Gyanesh Kumar, during his tenure in the Home ministry, played a key role in overseeing the abrogation of Article 370.
