Government Launches Nationwide Probe into Cancer-Causing Substances in Spices
“Government Launches Nationwide Probe into Cancer-Causing Substances in Spices”
Amid growing concerns over the safety of food and medical products in India, the government has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the regulation of the food and medical industry. Recent incidents, such as the cough syrup tragedy in Africa linked to Indian manufacturers and the discovery of cancer-causing substances in popular spice brands MDH and Everest, have raised serious alarms.
In response to these developments, the government has instructed food commissioners across the country to conduct thorough sampling of spices from all manufacturing units. This directive comes after food regulators in Hong Kong and Singapore flagged the presence of cancer-causing ingredients in select products of MDH and Everest.
Top government sources have confirmed that the process of collecting spice samples has already commenced, with alerts issued to all food commissioners nationwide. “All the food commissioners of the country have been alerted. The process of collecting samples of spices has been started. The order has been given. In three to four days, samples will be collected from all the spice manufacturing units of the country,” sources stated.
Importantly, the investigation extends beyond MDH and Everest brands, as samples will be collected from all spice manufacturing companies operating in India. The collected samples will undergo rigorous testing in laboratories, with results expected within 20 days.
This proactive measure underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and integrity of food and medical products in the country. By addressing potential risks and implementing stringent regulatory measures, authorities aim to safeguard public health and restore consumer trust in the industry.
