A special traffic police drive targeted unsafe school buses across Haryana on Friday, following a horrific accident in Mahendragarh district that claimed the lives of six children.

This decisive action comes a day after the tragedy, which also left 20 students injured. The accident has sparked national outrage, highlighting the critical need for stricter school bus safety regulations.

Haryana Chief Secretary Takes Charge

Haryana Chief Secretary T.V.S.N. Prasad responded swiftly by issuing stringent directives to the state’s civil and police administration. These directives mandate a comprehensive inspection of all school buses within the next ten days to ensure their roadworthiness. Additionally, a dedicated committee has been established to investigate the Mahendragarh accident and identify all contributing factors.

Emergency Meeting Focuses on Safety Measures

Chief Secretary Prasad convened an emergency meeting via video conference to discuss and reinforce safety measures across all schools in Haryana. The meeting included participation from divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, range additional DGPs, commissioners of police, and district SPs.

During the meeting, Prasad emphasized the paramount importance of safe transportation for schoolchildren. He directed officials to ensure that school management promptly replaces unfit buses with new ones and hires trained drivers. Strict and exemplary action will be taken against any school failing to comply with these safety protocols.

Committee Investigates Mahendragarh Accident

The Mahendragarh Deputy Commissioner, Monika Gupta, has formed a committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident. This committee will determine the exact causes and circumstances that led to the tragedy.

The accident involved a school bus from G L Public School, Kanina, which lost control and crashed near Unhani village. The incident resulted in the devastating loss of six young lives and injuries to several other students.

Police Arrest School Principal and Driver

Following the accident, police apprehended three individuals, including the principal of the private school and the bus driver. The driver is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and operating the bus without proper documentation, including a valid fitness certificate.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing student safety in transportation. The swift actions taken by Haryana’s Chief Secretary and the ongoing investigation demonstrate a strong commitment to preventing similar accidents in the future.
