Himachal Pradesh By-Election Results: Congress Triumphs in Dehra and Nalagarh, BJP Secures Hamirpur
The by-election results for the three crucial assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh—Dehra, Hamirpur, and Nalagarh—have been declared, with Congress securing victories in Dehra and Nalagarh, while BJP claimed the Hamirpur seat. In Hamirpur, BJP candidate Ashish Sharma emerged victorious, defeating Congress candidate Pushpinder Sharma by a margin of 1571 votes. The Dehra seat saw a historic win for Congress, with Kamlesh Thakur, wife of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, defeating BJP’s Hoshiar Singh by a significant 9399 votes. This victory marks the first time Congress has secured the Dehra seat since its establishment in 2012, a notable achievement given that the seat previously saw victories by BJP’s Ravindra Ravi and Independent Hoshiar Singh. Voter turnout in Dehra was recorded at 65.42%, a decrease from 71.04% in the 2022 elections. Meanwhile, in Nalagarh, Congress candidate Hardeep Singh Bawa triumphed over BJP’s K.L. Thakur with an impressive lead of 8990 votes. Chief Minister Sukhu expressed gratitude towards the voters, emphasizing that the results were a testament to the public’s support for genuine leadership over financial influence. He highlighted that Congress’s substantial leads in Dehra and Nalagarh reaffirmed the party’s growing credibility and his own political acumen, especially after a precarious period during the Rajya Sabha elections earlier in the year. The dual wins in these by-elections are seen as a reinforcement of Sukhu’s leadership and the party’s standing in the state. The 2012 re-establishment of the Dehra seat, following its last election in 1967 where independent candidate V. Bhushan won, adds historical significance to Kamlesh Thakur’s victory. Overall, the results reflect a mixed yet impactful performance for both major parties, with Congress making significant inroads in traditionally non-Congress territories and BJP maintaining its stronghold in Hamirpur. These outcomes are set to influence the political landscape in Himachal Pradesh, offering insights into voter sentiments and party strengths ahead of future electoral battles.
