Hog Deer Declared Mascot of Kathlour-Kaushalya Wildlife Sanctuary to Bolster Conservation Efforts
The Punjab State Wildlife Board has chosen the Hog Deer as the official mascot of the Kathlour-Kaushalya Wildlife Sanctuary, highlighting its significance within the sanctuary’s ecosystem and the state’s conservation efforts. This decision aligns with the board’s broader goal of protecting wildlife across Punjab.
The Standing Committee meeting, led by Forest and Wildlife Preservation Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak, emphasized the Hog Deer’s abundance within the sanctuary and its classification as an endangered species by the IUCN. This designation underscores the importance of safeguarding its population.
Beyond the mascot announcement, the committee approved other initiatives:
- Aqua duct construction in Bir Bhunerheri Wildlife Sanctuary: This project aims to protect villages near the sanctuary from monsoon floods by channeling water through an aqueduct.
- Simplified policy for limited hunting of Wild Boars and Nilgai: This policy aims to address crop damage caused by these animals while maintaining responsible wildlife management.
These actions demonstrate the Punjab State Wildlife Board’s commitment to diverse conservation strategies, encompassing species protection, habitat management, and community engagement.
