In a harrowing incident captured on camera, several houses have been severely damaged in the Anni Area of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. The extent of the destruction is yet to be fully assessed. However, it is fortunate that no loss of life has been reported so far, as the buildings were reportedly evacuated a few days prior to the incident. The devastating landslide struck a market area in Anni, a town located 76 km away from the Kullu district headquarters.
The alarming video footage depicts at least eight to nine large buildings crumbling near a bus stand in Anni. Preliminary reports suggest that one of the structures affected by the Thursday’s landslide housed two banks.
The question arises: Why has such havoc become a recurring phenomenon in Himachal Pradesh? Despite the inherent risks, many individuals have chosen to construct their homes on steep slopes, disregarding the potential consequences. The stark reality is that the region’s geographical features render it prone to landslides, and yet people have ventured into building on precarious terrain.
Questions have been raised with concerns about the decisions of local authorities permitting construction in high-risk areas. This has led to valid inquiries into why these houses and buildings were allowed to be erected in zones highly susceptible to landslides.
Furthermore, there is a growing call for the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to take more proactive measures against those who are contributing to the degradation of the environment by constructing buildings that disrupt the natural landscape and lead to catastrophes like the recent one. The question of accountability has come to the forefront, with individuals and authorities alike being questioned for their roles in this ongoing catastrophe.
The incident in Anni serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of human actions conflicting with the delicate balance of nature. It underscores the urgent need for responsible urban planning and a comprehensive evaluation of the potential risks involved in construction projects in such environmentally sensitive regions.
