Inderjit Kaur Becomes Ludhiana’s First Woman Mayor, AAP Strengthens Its Political Influence

In a historic development for Ludhiana, Inderjit Kaur has been elected as the city’s first woman mayor. This significant milestone was announced on January 20, 2025, by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann via a post on X. The election results also saw Rakesh Prashar, a seasoned politician, elected as the senior deputy mayor, while Prince Johar took up the role of deputy mayor.
Inderjit Kaur, who secured her victory from Ward Number 13, is a first-time councillor. Her election comes after the Ludhiana seat was reserved for a woman, sparking a competitive race that included several prominent contenders such as Nidhi Gupta, Amrit Varsha Rampal, and Maninder Kaur Ghuman. Kaur’s win is seen as a testament to her growing influence in Ludhiana’s political landscape, largely driven by her affiliation with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She is the current president of the AAP’s women’s wing for Ludhiana district and has an educational background that includes a commerce degree, an MBA, and a BEd. With over a decade of experience in teaching, Kaur’s leadership journey saw her previously serve as a principal at a private school, a role she left ahead of the Municipal Corporation elections.
Rakesh Prashar’s election as senior deputy mayor further strengthens the AAP’s position in the region. A former Congress leader, Prashar is a five-time councillor and the brother of Ashok Parashar Pappi, the AAP MLA for Ludhiana Central. His long-standing political presence and experience in local governance make him a key figure in the city’s municipal politics.
The new leadership team also includes Shyam Sunder Malhotra, who will serve as the leader of opposition in the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) house. Deepika Bhalla will hold the position of senior vice leader, and Harminder Pal Lally will be the vice leader. The swearing-in ceremony, which marked the official start of these new appointments, was held at Guru Nanak Dev Bhawan, and was a pivotal moment in the city’s political history.
The success of Inderjit Kaur and her AAP colleagues signifies not just a shift in Ludhiana’s political dynamics but also highlights the party’s growing influence in Punjab. This election comes at a time when the AAP has been consolidating its position across the state, reinforcing its commitment to political reforms and representation. The election of Ludhiana’s first woman mayor is seen as a step forward in empowering women in local governance and politics.
