This major democratic exercise, held using traditional ballot papers rather than Electronic Voting Machines, spanned 105 urban local bodies. The elections covered 2,019 wards, including eight crucial municipal corporations such as Mohali, Bathinda, Abohar, Barnala, Kapurthala, Moga, Batala, and Pathankot, alongside 76 municipal councils and 21 nagar panchayats. The vast scale of the election required the deployment of about 36,000 election personnel and 35,500 police personnel across 3,977 polling stations to maintain the democratic process.

Despite the heavy security presence, the polling day was marred by reports of physical scuffles, stone-pelting, and sporadic lawlessness in several districts. In Patiala’s Samana area, high tension escalated into direct clashes between local crowds and security forces, resulting in stone-pelting from both sides. Meanwhile, in Bathinda, incidents of aerial firing were reported near polling booths, creating panic among voters. In Ludhiana’s Raikot, a Congress candidate was severely assaulted, resulting in broken limbs, which triggered immediate outrage from opposition leaders.

The State Election Commission had established strict rules and expenditure limits for the candidates, ranging from 1.40 lakh rupees for nagar panchayats to 4 lakh rupees for municipal corporations, to ensure a level playing field. However, opposition parties strongly alleged that the ruling administration utilized unfair pressure tactics. The counting of votes is officially scheduled to take place on May 29, which will ultimately decide the political control of Punjab’s urban local governance.

The urban local body elections in Punjab registered an energetic voter turnout of approximately 61.5 percent as citizens across the state queued up to cast their votes.
