As Punjab steadily moves towards the 2027 Assembly elections, the Congress finds itself grappling with a familiar challenge\u2014not the strength of its political rivals, but divisions within its own ranks. At a time when the party is expected to project unity, strengthen its organisation and present itself as a credible alternative to the ruling dispensation, recurring public displays of infighting are raising serious questions about its preparedness for the electoral battle ahead.

The latest flashpoint came during an organisational meeting in Ludhiana, convened to review the party’s strategy and grassroots preparations for the 2027 elections. Instead of showcasing cohesion and discipline, the event witnessed sloganeering against Punjab Congress in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and state party president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, exposing internal discord before party workers and the public alike.

Supporters carrying “Baghel Go Back” placards and raising slogans against the senior leadership disrupted the programme, alleging that dissenting voices within the organisation were being ignored. The confrontation overshadowed the very purpose of the meeting, which was intended to energise the cadre and strengthen the party’s booth-level network.

The developments once again brought the Punjab Congress’s factional politics into sharp focus. Over the years, the state unit has repeatedly struggled to balance competing leadership ambitions, regional loyalties and organisational cohesion. Political observers believe that while internal debate is natural in any democratic party, public confrontations during crucial election preparations often create an impression of instability and weaken voter confidence.

Responding to the protest, Raja Warring adopted an aggressive stance. Without naming individuals, he reminded party workers that he had stood by several leaders during difficult times, including when they faced investigations. Referring indirectly to senior Congress leader Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Warring recalled that he had personally staged a prolonged protest outside the Vigilance Bureau office when Ashu was in custody, asserting that loyalty within the party should not be forgotten.

The Punjab Congress chief also alleged that those attempting to disrupt the programme were acting as “RSS agents”, a remark that further intensified the political atmosphere inside the meeting venue. At the same time, he emphasised that the Congress does not belong to any one individual and that every worker has an equal stake in the organisation.

Bhupesh Baghel, addressing party workers, delivered an equally firm message on organisational discipline. He warned that indiscipline would not be tolerated and said those responsible for disrupting official party programmes would be identified and action would follow. He also remarked that while political opponents outside the party are visible, organisations must remain equally alert to elements working from within to undermine collective efforts.

The timing of the controversy is particularly significant. The Congress has been attempting to rebuild its organisational structure after losing power in Punjab and has repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening every booth before the next Assembly election. However, public disagreements among senior leaders risk diluting that message and diverting attention away from issues affecting voters.

For any opposition party aspiring to return to government, organisational unity is often as important as electoral strategy. A divided leadership can confuse workers at the grassroots, reduce campaign effectiveness and create uncertainty among supporters. Election campaigns are ultimately fought through coordinated booth management, disciplined communication and a united leadership\u2014areas where visible internal conflicts can become a significant disadvantage.

Political analysts believe that Punjab’s electoral landscape remains highly competitive, with multiple parties seeking to expand their support base before 2027. In such an environment, prolonged factionalism within the Congress could provide its rivals with an opportunity to question the party’s ability to offer stable governance.

The challenge before the Congress is therefore larger than resolving individual differences. It must convince workers and voters alike that its leadership is capable of functioning as one cohesive team. Unless internal disputes are addressed behind closed doors and organisational discipline takes precedence over personal rivalries, the party’s road back to power could become increasingly difficult.

As Punjab’s political battle gathers momentum, the Congress faces a critical choice\u2014whether to channel its energy into presenting a united alternative before the electorate or remain preoccupied with internal battles that have repeatedly overshadowed its political narrative. The answer to that question may well determine the party’s prospects in the 2027 Assembly elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
