A serious construction accident in Mohali has brought workplace safety into focus after soil collapsed at an under-construction private hospital on Friday.

Rescue teams were deployed following the collapse, with workers trapped beneath the soil. Two labourers were rescued and taken to hospital, while two others were initially feared dead. An earthmover was used during the rescue operation, and officials said a Special Investigation Team would be formed to investigate the incident. Authorities later confirmed that everyone at the site had been accounted for.

The incident occurred at a time when Punjab’s cities are seeing continuing construction and infrastructure activity. Mohali, in particular, has experienced rapid urban development, with new residential, commercial and healthcare projects being built across the region.

Construction accidents involving excavation and soil collapse can happen quickly and leave workers with little time to escape. Safety measures at excavation sites therefore become particularly important, especially where workers are operating below ground level.

The Mohali incident is likely to raise questions about whether adequate precautions were taken before excavation work began. Such questions will need to be addressed through the official investigation rather than assumptions based solely on the accident itself.

The authorities’ decision to form a Special Investigation Team indicates that the incident is being treated seriously. The accident also underlines the need for stronger preventive inspections rather than relying on investigations after a tragedy. Construction authorities can reduce risks by ensuring that excavation sites are assessed before work begins, unstable soil is properly supported and workers receive appropriate safety equipment and training.

As Punjab continues to urbanise, construction activity is likely to remain strong. That makes occupational safety an increasingly important part of the state’s development story.

Economic growth and new infrastructure can create employment and improve public services, but they also bring responsibilities for protecting workers. The Mohali investigation will therefore be watched not only for determining responsibility in this particular case but also for what it reveals about construction-site safety standards more broadly.
