The Bharatiya Janata Party says it is preparing to contest all 117 Punjab Assembly seats on its own. Yet behind the public declaration, speculation about a renewed BJP-SAD alliance refuses to disappear.

That contradiction has become one of the most intriguing features of Punjab’s emerging 2027 election campaign.

BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santosh recently indicated that the party would prepare for a solo contest across all 117 constituencies. Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon has also publicly ruled out an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal.
On paper, the message is clear: the BJP wants to build an independent political organisation in Punjab.

But the political arithmetic is considerably more complicated.

The BJP and SAD were long-standing allies before their relationship broke down over the farm laws issue. Since then, both parties have travelled separate political paths. The BJP contested the 2024 Lok Sabha election independently and secured a sizeable vote share but failed to win a parliamentary seat in Punjab. The SAD, meanwhile, retained its traditional Bathinda stronghold but faced a wider decline.

The two parties nevertheless retain potentially complementary voter bases. Historically, the BJP was stronger among sections of the urban Hindu electorate, while the SAD possessed a deeper organisational and rural network among Sikh voters.

That old electoral chemistry is now being reconsidered.

Recent reports indicate that conversations between the two sides have continued despite public statements about separate contests. At the same time, differences over seat-sharing and the balance of power remain major obstacles.
For the BJP, going alone carries both opportunity and risk.

A solo campaign could allow the party to present itself as an independent alternative rather than as a junior partner. It would also give the BJP an opportunity to expand its organisational footprint in rural Punjab.

But winning seats is a different proposition from increasing vote share. Punjab’s electoral geography is highly competitive, and a party can secure a substantial statewide vote without translating that support into many Assembly constituencies.

For the SAD, meanwhile, an alliance with the BJP could provide organisational and electoral advantages, but it also carries political costs. The Akali Dal has historically built its identity around Punjab’s regional interests and Sikh political representation. Any alliance arrangement would therefore have to convince its traditional supporters that the party remains politically independent.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has already begun attacking the possibility of an Akali-BJP reunion, portraying it as politically opportunistic.
The alliance question is therefore bigger than seat-sharing.

It is about whether Punjab’s politics is moving towards a new four-way contest or whether the old BJP-SAD combination will return in a new form.

For now, the BJP’s official position is that it is preparing to fight alone. But in Punjab politics, the final electoral map is often drawn much closer to polling day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
