The state has also witnessed repeated police operations against organised criminal networks.

However, the claims made by Randhawa remain allegations and have not been independently established. Any conclusion about specific police officers would require an official investigation and corroborating evidence.

Randhawa’s demand nevertheless raises a broader question about institutional accountability. If senior police officers are alleged to have maintained contact with gangsters, a transparent inquiry would be necessary to establish whether such communication was legitimate, intelligence-related contact or evidence of an improper relationship.

The issue comes at a time when law and order is emerging as one of the principal political battlegrounds in Punjab.

The AAP government has repeatedly highlighted police action against drug traffickers, gangsters and illegal arms networks. In recent days, Amritsar police reported the arrest of three people and the seizure of two AK-47 rifles, three magazines and 50 cartridges in what it described as an illegal arms supply network.

Separately, three people were arrested in Mohali with 120 grams of heroin.

Such cases reinforce the argument that Punjab’s criminal landscape cannot be viewed solely through conventional policing. Narcotics, weapons, gang networks and alleged cross-border connections increasingly overlap.

The opposition is attempting to turn these concerns into a larger political argument against the Mann government. Congress leaders have accused the administration of failing to provide adequate control over organised crime, while the government has continued to emphasise police action and enforcement.

Randhawa’s demand for access to call records is therefore more than an individual political allegation. It touches on
the question of whether Punjab’s law-enforcement institutions have sufficient internal safeguards against criminal influence.

Any investigation would have to carefully distinguish between legitimate police contact with criminals, which can occur during intelligence gathering or negotiations, and unlawful or compromising relationships.

There is also a political context to Randhawa’s intervention. The Congress is attempting to reorganise ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. Sachin Pilot has recently taken charge as Punjab Congress in-charge and has indicated that the party will contest the election without declaring a CM candidate in advance.

The Congress therefore has an incentive to make law and order a central campaign issue while simultaneously attempting to demonstrate that its own organisation is capable of presenting a united alternative.

Randhawa’s allegations also come amid wider controversy surrounding the handling of drug-related complaints and alleged police excesses.

The recent death of Gulzar Singh in Sangrur, after he publicly raised the issue of drug availability with Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, has intensified scrutiny of the government’s approach to the narcotics problem.

The administration faces the difficult task of demonstrating that arrests and seizures are translating into a sustained reduction in drug availability.

For the police, the credibility challenge is equally important. Punjab Police remains one of the principal institutions expected to confront organised crime. Allegations of links between officers and criminal groups, even when unproven, can damage public confidence.

The most appropriate response would therefore be an evidence-based inquiry rather than a political exchange.

If Randhawa’s allegations contain verifiable information, a formal investigation could establish the facts. If they do not, the same process could provide clarity and protect the reputation of officers who may have been unfairly accused.

For Punjab, the larger issue is clear: the fight against organised crime requires not only strong enforcement but also public confidence that law-enforcement agencies themselves are transparent, accountable and insulated from criminal influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1408247789150306687898897.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12124\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1408247789150306687898897.jpg 600w, https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1408247789150306687898897-300x250.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1408247789150306687898897-150x125.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Congress MP and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has made serious allegations about alleged links between sections of the Punjab Police and criminal gangs, calling for a detailed examination of the mobile and call records of senior police officers.
