Their appearance together assumes significance because the state Congress has for some time been marked by competing leadership centres and differences among senior leaders.

The immediate issue before the Governor was the death of Gulzar Singh, who had publicly raised concerns about drugs and the condition of his son. Singh subsequently died after allegedly consuming poison. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, while allegations regarding political pressure or responsibility have not been established. Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema has denied any connection with the incident.

For Congress, however, the episode has become part of a wider political argument over the AAP government’s handling of drugs, law and order and public grievances.

The joint appearance of Channi and Randhawa is important because both are influential figures with their own political bases and histories within the Punjab Congress. Their cooperation could help the party project greater unity at a time when it is attempting to rebuild itself for the 2027 Assembly election.

The Congress suffered a major setback in the 2022 election, when it was reduced to just 18 seats while the Aam Aadmi Party won 92 of the 117 Assembly constituencies. Since then, the Congress has attempted to recover political ground through the Lok Sabha election and subsequent organisational changes.

The appointment of Sachin Pilot as the new Punjab Congress in-charge is now another attempt to strengthen the organisation. Pilot has already indicated that the party will not announce a chief ministerial candidate before the Assembly election. Instead, Congress intends to fight under collective leadership and decide its Chief Minister after securing a majority.

That decision could help reduce competition among senior leaders.

Punjab Congress has several prominent figures who could potentially aspire to lead the government, including Channi, Randhawa and state party president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Announcing one leader too early could intensify internal competition. Collective leadership allows the party to use the strengths of several leaders while postponing the leadership question.

The challenge, however, will be maintaining this unity when the election campaign moves into its most competitive phase.

Candidate selection is likely to be particularly sensitive. Ticket distribution has historically been a source of factional tensions within political parties. If different Congress leaders attempt to influence nominations in their respective strongholds, the appearance of unity could once again come under pressure.

Pilot’s principal task will therefore be organisational rather than merely electoral.

He will have to ensure that senior leaders cooperate, local units remain functional and the party develops a common narrative against the AAP government.

Law and order and the drug problem are already emerging as major components of that narrative.

Congress has argued that repeated incidents involving narcotics, gang activity and alleged police excesses demonstrate shortcomings in the government’s approach. The ruling party, meanwhile, points to arrests, seizures and enforcement operations as evidence that its administration is acting against criminal networks.

The Congress delegation’s meeting with the Governor also shows how opposition parties can use constitutional offices to highlight issues they believe require independent scrutiny.

But Congress will need to go beyond criticism if it wants to convince voters in 2027.

The party will need to explain how it would tackle drugs, improve policing, generate employment, support farmers and strengthen Punjab’s finances. Voters are likely to judge the opposition not simply on its ability to criticise the incumbent government but on whether it offers a credible alternative.

The political timeline now gives Congress additional preparation time. With Census-related scheduling making an early November Assembly election increasingly unlikely, the parties have several more months to organise themselves before the Assembly’s term ends in March 2027.

For Congress, that time could be decisive.

If the Channi-Randhawa cooperation develops into a wider understanding among the party’s senior leadership, Congress could enter the 2027 contest with a stronger organisational base.

If internal rivalries return, the AAP government will have an opportunity to portray the opposition as divided.

For now, the message from the joint appearance is clear: the Punjab Congress understands that unity will be one of its most important requirements if it hopes to mount a serious challenge to Bhagwant Mann’s government in 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"606\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1435227303299553344683876.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12130\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1435227303299553344683876.jpg 606w, https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1435227303299553344683876-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jeevaypunjab.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/img_20260911_1435227303299553344683876-150x94.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 606px) 100vw, 606px\" \/><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The Punjab Congress appears to be making a fresh attempt to put its internal differences aside as senior leaders Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa appeared together at a politically significant meeting with Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria.
