Amritsar  \u2014 Amritsar witnessed two separate fatal shooting incidents within hours, including the killing of a Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector while on duty and the death of a young man in another part of the city.

The killing of ASI Harjit Singh has triggered a major police investigation, with Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav visiting the crime scene on Friday and reviewing the probe with senior officers. The two incidents have also brought renewed attention to the availability of illegal firearms and the security of residents and police personnel in the city.

Harjit Singh, who belonged to Tarn Taran district and was posted at Gate Hakima police station, was deployed on patrol duty in the Bhagtanwala area. According to the preliminary police account, two unidentified men riding a motorcycle approached the officer near the Bhagtanwala grain market at around 3 am and opened fire. Singh was hit three times. He was rushed to a private hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The circumstances of the attack have led investigators to examine the movements of the assailants before and after the shooting. Police teams are collecting evidence from the crime scene and examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area in an effort to establish the identity of the attackers.

DGP Gaurav Yadav visited the spot and held discussions with senior police officials about the progress of the investigation. He described the killing as a serious matter and said the investigation was being expedited. According to the preliminary assessment cited by the police, a .30-bore pistol was used in the attack and the assailants allegedly fired at Singh from behind.

The police have not yet established the motive for the killing. Investigators are examining multiple possibilities and are attempting to identify the attackers before determining the circumstances that led to the shooting.

The incident has also prompted a strong response from the Punjab government. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced financial assistance totalling \u20b92 crore for the family of the deceased officer. According to the announcement, \u20b91 crore will be provided as ex-gratia assistance by the Punjab government, while HDFC Bank will provide another \u20b91 crore under the applicable insurance arrangement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n


Mann paid tribute to Harjit Singh and said the government would stand with his family following his death while performing his duty.

The ASI’s killing occurred against the backdrop of another recent shooting involving a Punjab Police officer. Earlier this month, ASI Jaswant Singh was reportedly fired upon near Bhalla village in the Ajnala area, although he survived that attack. The latest incident has therefore added to concerns within the police force about the risks faced by personnel during routine patrol and field duties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second shooting in Amritsar

In a separate incident later the same night, a young man was shot dead in the Surta Singh area under the Islamabad police station.

The victim was identified as Sahilpreet Singh, a resident of Harkrishan Nagar. According to police and local reports, he had gone out for a walk after dinner when two men riding an Activa allegedly opened fire on him and fled from the spot. A police case has been registered and investigators are working to establish the circumstances and motive behind the killing.

The two cases are being investigated separately and there is currently no official indication that the shootings were connected.

Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence in both cases. The identity of the attackers, the reason for the shootings and whether the accused had any previous criminal record are among the questions investigators are seeking to answer.

The back-to-back incidents have placed Amritsar’s law-and-order situation under increased scrutiny. The police investigation will now be closely watched, particularly because one of the victims was a police officer killed while carrying out his duty.

For the authorities, the immediate priorities are to identify and arrest those responsible, establish the motives behind both shootings and determine the source of the weapons used. The investigations will also establish whether the incidents have any connection with wider criminal networks or were isolated acts of violence.

At present, police have not publicly established a definitive motive in either case. The evidence being gathered from CCTV cameras, forensic examination and other investigative leads is expected to provide a clearer picture in the coming days.

The deaths have left two families mourning and have put the spotlight once again on the challenge of preventing gun violence in Punjab’s urban centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
