The Congress has appointed former Indian hockey captain and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh as the new president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, replacing Amarinder Singh Raja Warring at a crucial stage ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.

The appointment came on Friday, October 2, shortly after Warring formally stepped down as state Congress president. Pargat Singh, 62, has represented Jalandhar Cantonment in the Punjab Assembly since 2012 and has also served as a cabinet minister in the Charanjit Singh Channi government. He is currently an AICC secretary handling Jammu and Kashmir affairs.

The change marks a significant organisational transition for the Punjab Congress, which has been dealing with prolonged differences among senior leaders and competing groups within the state unit. Warring had headed the PPCC since April 2022, taking charge after the party’s defeat in that year’s Assembly election.

His departure followed months of internal disagreements. A group of Congress leaders associated with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had been seeking a change in the state leadership, while other senior leaders had also expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of the organisation. The issue became increasingly public in recent months, prompting the central leadership to seek organisational feedback from Punjab.

The Congress had appointed Sachin Pilot as its Punjab affairs in-charge on September 5, replacing former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Pilot subsequently held consultations with leaders and functionaries across the state as part of an organisational assessment. Reports based on party sources said his feedback was discussed by the central leadership before the decision on a change at the top of the Punjab unit.

Warring, after meeting Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Friday, said he had submitted his resignation voluntarily after assessing the situation within the party. He also suggested that he believed Pilot may have concluded that he should no longer continue as state president, while acknowledging that he had no concrete proof of Pilot personally making that decision.

Pargat Singh’s elevation now places a familiar Punjab political figure at the head of the state organisation. Before entering electoral politics, he was one of India’s best-known hockey players and captained the national team. His political career has largely been centred on Jalandhar Cantonment, where he has won successive Assembly elections since 2012.

His new responsibility, however, extends well beyond his constituency. As PPCC president, Pargat Singh will be expected to oversee the party’s organisational preparations across Punjab, coordinate with its senior leadership and manage the state unit’s campaign machinery as the 2027 Assembly election approaches.

The Congress’s leadership change also comes at a time when the party is seeking to bring its different factions onto a common organisational platform. Earlier arrangements had attempted to distribute responsibilities among leaders from different camps, but tensions continued to surface in public. The central leadership’s latest move therefore puts the focus on how the new state president works with leaders who had previously taken different positions on the question of party leadership.

Pargat Singh was among the names discussed for the post before the final decision. Other names reported to have been considered included Vijay Inder Singla, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Rana KP Singh and Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria. The eventual choice of Pargat Singh brings a change in leadership while retaining a senior Jat Sikh political face at the top of the state organisation.

The appointment also comes with limited time before the next Assembly election. The Congress will now have to move from an extended leadership debate to the practical work of strengthening its district and block-level organisation, coordinating its senior leaders and preparing its campaign.

For Pargat Singh, the immediate challenge is organisational rather than simply electoral. He takes charge of a state unit that has experienced visible internal differences, while the party’s central leadership has made clear that organisational cohesion and preparations for the 2027 contest are now a priority.

The Congress has yet to demonstrate how the new arrangement will affect the balance among its various state leaders and factions. That will depend on how the new PPCC president distributes organisational responsibilities and how the different groups within the party respond to the change.

With Pargat Singh now formally at the helm, the Punjab Congress has entered a new phase of its preparations for the 2027 Assembly elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
