Punjab has taken a major step towards reclaiming its place at the heart of international hockey, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann inaugurating the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab-2026 at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar on October 27. The tournament marks the first time Punjab is hosting the prestigious continental hockey championship, bringing together six Asian teams and placing the state’s rich sporting legacy in the international spotlight.

The competition features India, Bangladesh, China, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. League-stage matches are being held in Jalandhar, while the semifinals and final are scheduled to take place at the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

The opening ceremony was a celebration of Punjab’s deep connection with hockey, a sport that has produced generations of legendary players and Olympic champions. Mann honoured the participating teams’ captains and expressed confidence that Punjab could eventually host the Hockey World Cup in 2030.

The Chief Minister said the state’s ambition went beyond organising a successful tournament. Punjab, he indicated, wanted to strengthen its international sporting profile, create better opportunities for young athletes and bring major global sporting events to the region.

Punjab’s Hockey Legacy Takes Centre Stage

Punjab’s contribution to Indian hockey stretches back nearly a century. From the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics to the 2024 Paris Games, the state has produced numerous Olympians and medal winners who helped establish India’s reputation as a hockey powerhouse.

The state’s sporting history includes legendary names such as Balbir Singh Senior, Udham Singh, Prithipal Singh, Ajit Pal Singh, Surjit Singh and Pargat Singh. Their achievements continue to inspire young players aspiring to represent India at the highest level.

Balbir Singh Senior remains one of Indian hockey’s most celebrated figures. His extraordinary performance in the 1952 Helsinki Olympic final, in which he scored five goals, became a defining moment in the country’s Olympic sporting history. Udham Singh, meanwhile, represented India at four Olympic Games and won medals during his distinguished international career.

Punjab’s influence has extended beyond producing players. Sportspersons from the state have also played important leadership roles, including captaining the Indian Olympic hockey team on multiple occasions.

The state’s hockey tradition remains visible in the current national setup. India won bronze medals in men’s hockey at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, and the Paris 2024 Olympics. The Harmanpreet Singh-led Indian team includes eight players from Punjab, underlining the state’s continuing contribution to the national side.

From World Cup Glory to the Next Generation

India’s 1975 Men’s Hockey World Cup triumph remains a landmark achievement, with Punjab’s Ajit Pal Singh leading the team to the historic title. The state has also contributed to India’s success at the junior level, including the Junior World Cup victories in 2001 and 2016, associated with players such as Gagan Ajit Singh and Harjeet Singh.

Jalandhar and its surrounding villages have played a particularly important role in nurturing hockey talent. Sansarpur, Khusropur and Mithapur are among the villages known for producing accomplished players, with more than 20 Olympians associated with these hockey-rich communities.

The tournament also carries a strong local connection through Olympian Surjit Singh, a member of India’s 1975 World Cup-winning team. His statue at the stadium named after him serves as a reminder of the sporting heritage that continues to shape Punjab’s hockey culture.

New Infrastructure and Investment in Sports

The Punjab government has highlighted sports infrastructure and athlete development as important parts of its efforts to strengthen the state’s sporting ecosystem.

According to the information shared by the government, six new astro-turf hockey grounds have been built during its tenure, while work on two additional grounds is underway. The state has also developed 18 astro-turf grounds designed for six-a-side hockey.

At the training level, the Punjab Institute of Sports centre has 102 hockey players, while a Khelo India centre supports another 33 players. The broader sports development programme includes 14 Centres of Excellence under the Punjab State Institute of Sports, where 1,870 athletes are receiving specialised training.

The government has also pointed to the fourth season of Khedan Watan Punjab Diyan, which has attracted more than six lakh registrations, and the Mukh Mantri Khed Maidan initiative, under which more than 3,000 sports grounds are being developed.

Punjab’s 2023 sports policy and a dedicated sports budget of ₹1,744 crore have been presented as part of the state’s wider strategy to expand sporting opportunities, improve facilities and identify talent at the grassroots level.

Can Punjab Host the Hockey World Cup in 2030?

Mann’s stated ambition to bring the Hockey World Cup to Punjab in 2030 places the Asian Champions Trophy in a broader context. Successfully hosting the present tournament could help the state demonstrate its organisational capacity, venue readiness and ability to welcome international teams and spectators.

A major international sporting event could also generate economic activity beyond the stadium. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, sports equipment businesses and local vendors may benefit from the arrival of players, officials, media personnel and visitors.

For young athletes, international tournaments staged at home can provide an opportunity to watch elite players closely and experience the atmosphere of high-level competition. Such exposure, combined with sustained coaching and modern facilities, can help strengthen the pathway from grassroots sport to the national team.

However, hosting a World Cup would require sustained planning, international coordination, adequate infrastructure and the fulfilment of the relevant governing body’s requirements. The Asian Champions Trophy offers Punjab an opportunity to build experience and demonstrate its readiness for larger responsibilities.

Sporting Legends and Dignitaries Attend the Opening

The inauguration was attended by Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat; MLAs Balkar Singh and Ishaan Chabbewal; Principal Secretary, Sports, Varun Roojam; Sports Director Abhijeet Kaplish; Jalandhar Mayor Vineet Dhir; Hockey Punjab president Nitin Kohli; Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath; and Tourism Adviser Deepak Bali, among other dignitaries.

With six Asian teams competing, matches spread across Jalandhar and Mohali, and the state’s ambitions extending towards 2030, the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Punjab-2026 is more than a sporting fixture for Punjab. It is also an opportunity to showcase the state’s hockey heritage, promote emerging talent and strengthen its case for hosting bigger international competitions.

For a region that has contributed generations of players to Indian hockey, the tournament brings together pride in past achievements and expectations for the future.
