Rare institutional distinction recognises generations of personnel for courage, professionalism and commitment to public safety; honour marks a milestone in the force’s 60-year journey

Chandigarh, : The Chandigarh Police has added a prestigious distinction to its institutional history, receiving the President’s Colours on the occasion of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations, marking 60 years of service to the city and the region.

The honour recognises six decades of the force’s contribution to maintaining law and order, protecting citizens and responding to changing security challenges. It also acknowledges the dedication of generations of police personnel who have served with courage, discipline and professionalism, often under demanding circumstances.

Over the years, Chandigarh Police has had to adapt to a wide range of challenges, from confronting terrorism during a difficult period in the region’s history to managing the security requirements of a rapidly expanding urban centre. Its responsibilities have evolved alongside the city, requiring greater vigilance, improved policing practices and sustained efforts to maintain public order.

The force’s journey has been closely linked with Chandigarh’s transformation. The city, which once faced serious security concerns during the years of militancy and terrorism in the region, has developed into an important urban and administrative centre. The police have played a significant role in addressing security threats and safeguarding the city’s peace and stability.

The conferment of the President’s Colours is therefore more than a ceremonial recognition. It is an institutional tribute to officers and personnel, serving and retired, whose work has contributed to public safety and the functioning of the police organisation over six decades. Their efforts have included frontline policing, investigation, traffic management, intelligence gathering, emergency response and maintaining public confidence.

The Diamond Jubilee celebrations have given the force an opportunity to reflect on its legacy while recognising the responsibilities that lie ahead. With urbanisation, changing patterns of crime, technological developments and increasingly complex public-safety requirements, policing continues to demand professional competence, accountability and public engagement.

The prestigious honour is also expected to serve as a source of inspiration for serving personnel and future generations of the force. It reinforces the values of integrity, courage, discipline and duty that remain central to effective policing.

As Chandigarh Police completes 60 years, the President’s Colours stand as a recognition of its institutional contribution and a reminder of its continuing responsibility to protect citizens, uphold the law and serve society with dedication.
