Mansa, November 8: Anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota was cremated on Sunday at his family\u2019s farmland in Mansa, bringing to an end a prolonged wait of 26 days following his killing in a shooting incident that had triggered widespread protests and renewed debate over Punjab\u2019s drug menace. His body was brought from PGIMER, Chandigarh, to Mansa, where a large number of supporters and local residents gathered to pay their final respects. As the procession moved through the town, people showered flowers on the mortal remains and raised slogans in his memory before the body was taken to the family home and subsequently to the fields on Chakerian Road for the last rites. The post-mortem examination had been conducted at PGIMER on Saturday, November 7, after the body remained at the Mansa Civil Hospital mortuary for more than three weeks. The family had initially refused the procedure and continued its agitation for 22 days, demanding justice and action in the case. The deadlock was eventually resolved following discussions between the family, the Parvinder Singh Jhota Insaaf Committee and a Punjab government delegation led by Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan and Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian. The government agreed to several demands, including compensation of Rs 2 crore for the bereaved family, a government job for Jhota\u2019s wife, the release of protesters arrested during the agitation and withdrawal of cases registered against them. The investigation into the killing has also been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following the family\u2019s demand. Jhota was shot dead on October 13 inside a medical store in a busy market area of Mansa. According to reports, he had confronted the shop owner over the alleged sale of addictive medicines to an elderly customer when the shooting took place. The incident was reportedly being livestreamed on Facebook and left four other people injured. The shop owner was subsequently arrested. Jhota\u2019s killing became a flashpoint in Punjab\u2019s ongoing debate over drug abuse and the alleged availability of habit-forming pharmaceutical substances. His father, Bhim Singh, has alleged that the killing involved a wider conspiracy and accused political figures and police officials of complicity, claims that remain subject to investigation. He has demanded an impartial probe and the transfer of Mansa SSP Vaibhav Chaudhary. Reports on Sunday said Bhim Singh had continued his hunger strike despite the completion of the post-mortem and the cremation arrangements, maintaining that his demand for the SSP\u2019s transfer had not been addressed. He has also appealed to Punjab\u2019s youth to stay away from drugs and turn the fight against addiction into a collective social movement. The family has described Jhota as a social warrior who stood against the drug trade, while supporters have vowed to continue raising the issue. His cremation, after weeks of protests and negotiations, has given the family an opportunity to perform the last rites, but questions surrounding his killing and the wider drug problem in Punjab remain central to the demand for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
