India and ASEAN Strengthen Economic Ties Through AITIGA Review

India and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) took a significant step towards enhancing economic cooperation by holding the 5th AITIGA Joint Committee and related meetings in Jakarta, Indonesia. The meeting, co-chaired by India and Malaysia, focused on reviewing the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) to create new opportunities for businesses in both regions. Building upon previous rounds of negotiations, the 3rd round in Jakarta witnessed substantial progress across all sub-committees, covering critical areas like market access, rules of origin, and trade facilitation. India’s delegation held bilateral meetings with ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat to explore further avenues for collaboration. To gain insights from the industry, the Indian delegation interacted with businesses in Jakarta. With ASEAN being a major trade partner for India, the AITIGA review is expected to boost bilateral trade significantly. The next round of negotiations will be held in India in November 2024.
