Innovative initiatives of the state government to strengthen  milk based economy of state

Himachal Pradesh, where 90% of the population resides in villages, boasts a vibrant dairy sector that plays a pivotal role in the state’s rural economy. This sector serves as a lifeline for many, particularly small and marginal farmers and landless individuals, providing crucial employment and empowering women through their participation. Recognizing its significance, the state government has implemented several innovative initiatives to bolster the dairy industry and elevate Himachal Pradesh to a position of prosperity.

One key initiative is the generous increase in milk procurement price by Rs. 6 per liter, directly benefiting milk producers. To ensure quality production and strengthen the economy of these producers, the Himachal Pradesh State Co-operative Milk Producer’s Federation Limited (HIMUL) has established a network of 102 Automatic Milk Collection Units (AMCUs) across the state, with 455 currently operational. Additionally, 106 bulk milk coolers and 35 can-meter coolers have been installed to preserve milk quality.

Furthermore, the government is constructing a state-of-the-art automatic milk processing plant at Dagwar in Kangra district. This modern facility will not only diversify the range of dairy products available but also significantly contribute to the rural economy.

Cooperatives are another vital pillar supporting the dairy sector. These societies empower farmers, breaking down barriers based on gender, caste, religion, and community. The ambitious Him Ganga Scheme, with a budget of Rs. 500 crore, aims to initiate a White Revolution in the state. Through this scheme, 201 new milk cooperative societies have been established in Hamirpur and Kangra districts, with a notable focus on women’s empowerment. Eleven women societies in Hamirpur and eight in Kangra demonstrate the government’s commitment to this cause.

Beyond economic benefits, the dairy sector also plays a vital role in combating malnutrition and poverty reduction. The Himachal Pradesh State Cooperative Milk Producers Federation Limited has diversified its activities by producing Panjiri, especially for the Women and Child Welfare Department. Fortified Panjiri, bakery biscuits, wheat vermicelli, and whole milk powder are among the products supplied by the Federation, laying the foundation for a healthy and thriving future for the state’s children.

Himachal Pradesh’s vast livestock resources hold immense potential for improving the socio-economic conditions of its rural population. The dairy sector, through the government’s innovative initiatives and focus on women’s participation, is poised to usher in a new era of prosperity for milk producers and contribute significantly to the overall development of the state.
