Thousands Flock to Chandigarh Crafts Mela Amid Traffic Restrictions
Chandigarh (Kulbir Singh Kalsi): Despite traffic restrictions imposed by the Chandigarh Administration ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city, thousands of enthusiastic visitors thronged the Crafts Mela on Tuesday. The event was a vibrant celebration of India’s diverse folk traditions, featuring captivating performances and engaging activities that drew large crowds.
The day began with high-energy stage performances, including mesmerizing Rajasthani folk singing by Murli Rajasthani, followed by traditional dances such as Jhoomar (Punjab), Sirmauri Naati (Himachal Pradesh), Badhai (Madhya Pradesh), Rakhi Pada (Arunachal Pradesh), and Panthi Bhapang Badan by Yusuf Khan. Other unique performances included Jaabro and Balti dances from Ladakh, Kalbelia from Rajasthan, and Dhamaali from Jammu and Kashmir.
Star performers Sukhi Brar and Naqqal Goni Khan stole the show with their electrifying stage presence. Meanwhile, the grounds were abuzz with performances like Kachi Ghori (Rajasthan), Behurupiyas, Nachar, and Baajigar (Punjab), as well as Nagada and Been Jogis (Haryana), keeping the crowd thoroughly entertained.
The Mela’s daily quiz contest for children attracted over 200 participants, while an on-the-spot photography competition themed “Glimpses from Crafts Mela,” organized by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademy, saw enthusiastic participation from photography lovers.
The evening’s highlight was the soul-stirring performances by Himachal Pradesh’s folk music maestros, Kaku Ram Thakur and Geeta Bhardwaj. Thakur captivated the audience with popular songs like “Chitta Tera Chola Kala Dora…,” “Inhan Vadiyan Yo Tudka Lana O Thekedarniyes…,” and “Chamba Uaar Ke Nadiya Paar…” Bhardwaj added magic to the night with her renditions of hits like “Maye Ni Meriye Jammuan De Rahe…,” “Udiya Kaleya Kaga…,” and “Dhoban Paniye Jo Chali Ei,” earning roaring applause from the audience.
Looking ahead, popular singer Feroz Khan is set to grace the stage on December 4 with his soulful melodies, promising another memorable evening. The Crafts Mela, a grand showcase of India’s rich cultural heritage, will continue to enchant visitors until December 8.
