A Ludhiana-based man has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000 for transmitting child pornography content through Facebook Messenger. The accused has been identified as Anuj Kumar, a resident of Village Sahnewal in Ludhiana.

The sentence was handed down by the District and Sessions Court SAS Nagar. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Kumar.

The case against Kumar was registered following a tip-off from the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The tip-off alleged that Kumar had been transmitting child pornography content through Facebook Messenger.

An investigation by the Cyber Crime Prevention against Women and Children (CCPWC) Unit of the Punjab State Cyber Crime Cell revealed that Kumar had indeed been transmitting child pornography content. The investigation also led to the arrest of Kumar and the recovery of the mobile phone used to commit the offence.

DIG Cyber Crime Nilambari Jagadale said that publishing or transmitting child pornography content is a punishable offence under the IT Act. She said that the offence carries a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

Jagadale also appealed to parents to be vigilant about their children’s online activities. She said that parents should talk openly with their children about their online activities and keep a check on their online friends. She also advised parents to teach their children to keep their location private.

The CCPWC is a special unit established to prevent and counter cyber crimes against Women and Children.
